Is Twitter doing to much?
There are so many social networking sites out there today. Amongst the most popular would be Myspace, Facebook and now Twitter. But when is a network doing to much or when are you as a person doing to much when it comes to your personal page?
I think when Myspace first came out, it was more of a place for friends. You would send little messages to one another and post a few pictures. Now people are befriending you who don’t know you and people use it as a self promotion. Is this smart marketing or someone craving to much attention?
You have people of both genders and all ages posting pictures that may be viewed as inappropriate. People trying to plug their latest CD or promote some sort of business that they do. Again, is this smart marketing or just doing to much?
These social networks have become so big that it is common for your place of work to ask if you have a profile page. Many times places of work conduct their own research to see if they can find your page to see what kind of content about yourself you post. Some people have even been fired over what has been on their profile.
People often forget that when they are putting things on the internet, everyone in the world can see it. An image can be copied and posted anywhere else. People can create fake profiles using your images. As many of you know, a lot of people duplicate celebrity pages.
Did anyone hear how recently 90,000 sex offenders were removed off of Myspace? Yes, 90,000. Imagine an innocent teenager communicating with someone they think is their age, but turns out to be a sex offender. How scary is that.
That brings me to Twitter. Recently this is the new and hot thing to be a part of. It seems as if everyone is doing it. You see celebrities on television doing it in the middle of interviews and everyone plugging their Twitter page.
When I first heard about Twitter I didn’t really understand it. Then when I found out more information on it, I thought to myself, “Wow, people have to much time on their hands.” I don’t think I would ever go out of my way to post each little thing I may be doing thru the day. Nor would I expect anyone to care about what it is that I am doing at any given moment.
So where is the line drawn between people who crave attention and people who have some sort of real purpose with their personal profiles? It is proven that some good has come out of these social networks. Some people have found it effective when it comes to raising money for charity. Other people have found some sort of short term fame.

you ask some good questions here, although the answers are more difficult – my personal view is that facebook is more for genuine friends and community, whereas twitter is more for building a following and using that for marketing – thanks, revivor

I’ve never been much of a blogger. I use facebook and my space to communicate with a family and few select freinds; I don’t use either as a marketing device. I’m with Clay on the time thing. I read my friend news, my email, write for Triond and I’m trying out a couple of other places. By the time I get all that done, several hours have passed.

I’m with Clay, with working, Triond and Stumbleupon (and trying to write occasionally!) I’ve not got the time for anything else. Interesting article.

A great articule. I saw a post on Facebook just the other day saying: ‘Going shopping—you can follow my progress on Twitter’.
She was going shopping, not on an expedition to the North Pole! What sort of person would need an update on something as humdrum and menial as that? Sad, or what!?

Did you know that if you go to your account page here on Triond, that you can set it up so that each time you post an article, it places a notice on Twitter for you. You don’t have to take the time to do it. I am on two other sites that do that same thing. That’s less work for me to do in promoting what I do.
