Tips for Tweeters whom are just getting the hang of it or whom are just beginning their Tweetastic adventure.
Twitter can be pretty difficult and is rather complex, specially if you’re just starting and don’t really know your way around. Twitter is basically a quick inside scoop on people’s lives as they chose to post with additional features that can help you communicate with friends and find new ones as well.
The Home Page
Your homepage is where you can see what your friends have posted or have replied to you. This is also where you can see what you’ve posted previously and where you can post new items. The box below “What are you doing?” is where you are able to post anything, from replies to your friends or to what you are doing.
How to Communicate with Friends
There are two ways to communicate with friends via twitter, sending them direct messages or sending them replies. First you must ensure that both of you are following each other.
To send replies:
- Go to their page by just clicking the “following” or the “followers” links.
- There will be a shaded tab under your friend’s name and picture, on the left it will say following and on the right there will be a button, click the button and click the option that says “Mention (your friend’s name here)” It’s the first option when you click the button and on the left there’s an image of the “@”
- You will automatically be returned to your homepage and the first thing you should notice is that in the box under “What are you doing?” there will be an “@(your friend’s username)” which will be the reply to your friend, all you’ll have to do then is write down your reply to them and it will automatically mention them.
- If you know their user name off by heart, just write the @ sign and next to it, without any spaces, write their username and it will automatically change into a reply to your friend. This is the easier and faster way to do this but you’ll have to know your friend’s username off by heart.
Now with sending replies you won’t get email notifications saying someone has mentioned you or sent a reply, you must be thinking “well then how will they see it?”That can be done with a click of a button! This can also be done by you, just to check if you’ve had any replies lately. At your homepage under where your user name and followers are, to the very right of the page you will see a white tab saying “Home”Under the “Home” tab the first option will be @(YOUR username) and you can click this whenever you feel like to search and see whether someone has given you a reply that you can’t see because of the many twitter statuses. You will automatically be redirected to a place where you can see where all your friends have given you replies. You can also write @(any username) you like in the search button to see who’s talking about or who’s getting mentioned!
To send direct messages:
- Following the same process earlier by going to their account and clicking the button, this time click the second option which is “Direct message to (friend’s username)” or the one with an envelope next to it.
- You will automatically be redirected to a screen with nothing but just a box and words on top that say “Send (friend’s name) a message”. You type in their message and click send.
- You will be automatically redirected to a place that acts as your mail, direct messages cannot be seen by anyone other than you and the sender. You will notice two tabs at the bottom saying “Inbox” and “Sent”. You will get notifications like statuses on your homepage, in this mail area.
- When you have a new direct message, the second option under “Home” or the button right underneath “@(username)” will have a number next to it to show how many direct messages you have.
- From this area you can send anyone direct messages, just press the drop down box, select your friend’s username and send them a message in the box.
