Twitter….what is the real meaning behind this crazed new social networking site? I must admit when I first learned of Twitter, I was a curious to know what the hoopla was all about. Primarily I thought it would be cool to converse with celebrities on a regular basis, after all that was the only reason I first signed up with the site in the first place. In essence, I decided to create my very own twitter profile. According to the media, Twitter is the wave of the future and it is better than most social networking sites so I’ve heard. Quite frankly, I would have to disagree with them on that, I think twitter is unnecessary. First off, you have to follow people. Say for instance, you find someone you want to connect with, you would have an option to follow someone, however; if you follow them, you will not be able to reply to their messages unless they reciprocate the following so you basically have to wait for them to follow you before you can reply to their update. Second, you are supposed to let people know what you are doing all throughout the day, well if you don’t know the people on twitter, who really cares what you are doing every minute of the day. What makes Twitter different than any other chat service? All you are doing is chatting with a limited amount of twits. It’s totally useless. I would think that Twitter is solely for advertising and promotional purposes. When I log on to twitter all I see is celebrities or corporate executives promoting either a song, concept or a website. I wouldn’t recommend Twitter to anyone, unless you are a groupie then you could watch your favorite artist all day long, but other than that, it is a waste of time for the average Joe. I think we should leave Twitter to the celebrities, and utilize Facebook for the common folk. If you want to chat with people, then chat through Yahoo, MSN or AOL.

I spent a little time trying to see how Twitter actually works and it was basically a generic networking site with limited capabilities. All you can do is chat, no special features like Myspace or Blackplanet, it’s just a generic site that some knucklehead put together in order to make money. Don’t hop on this bandwagon, it’s really a waste of time and if you are not in the entertainment industry, then there is really no need for it.
