Things I Hate to Read on YouTube

Social Networks

The comments section of video-sharing sites can be a great place for the sharing of knowledge. Unfortunately, anonymity and a generation of impatient internet junkies means that one has to wade through a lot of garbage to get to the interesting comments.

Hate Messages

This has been discussed a lot in gay forums online. Racism, sexism, and antisemitism also run rampant in open discussion forums. Americans are always shouting about freedom of speech, but there is another right that is equally important: freedom from oppression and hate. Instead of thumbs up, thumbs down, and spam, we should also be able to flag comments as offensive.

First

Not necessarily, you brainless twit! You’re definitely not first on any list of mine! If you don’t have an interesting comment to write, then don’t write anything at all. I am tempted to go the profile pages of these dweebs and just write random numbers in their comments section.

Spam

The dog poop of our virtual age. Littering our common spaces for others to clean up.

Chain Mail

“If you don’t copy and paste this message to one hundred other videos, you will die a painful death.” Ugh. It’s bad enough that my Aunt Doris clutters my inbox with this kind of nonsense. I shiver to think that someone in my neighborhood might actually be the author of this stuff. I was shocked to discover that this is an international phenomenon.

Can You Please Subtitle This?

No, I can’t. If you are interested in watching raw, illegally downloaded episodes of Japanese television then you better sign up for Japanese lessons. People who ask questions like this are clearly unaware of the amount of work that go into making fansubs. It is usually a team of people, not individuals.

Where’s Part 5?

Somewhere in YouTube purgatory. Depending on the connection speed and the size of the video it can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours for a video to upload. If this television program is so important to you, you should DVR it instead of whining to the fans kind enough to take the time to upload for other fans.

When are You Going to Upload Episode 15?

Why don’t you subscribe and you’ll find out as soon as it has been done. People who upload popular television onto YouTube are doing it to connect with other fans, even at the risk of having their profile deleting for copyright violations. If you are so keen to see episode 15 then go to the content owner’s website and whine there.

Thanks so much for loading all these episodes. I really appreciate it! By the way, could you please upload episode 15 soon? I’ve been waiting for 2 days now and you usually upload them right away.

Kissing up before begging for a free service someone is doing for you doesn’t make your begging any less annoying. Just because you don’t have a life outside of Youtube, does not mean that the person whose videos you like to watch doesn’t. Maybe he’s sick? Working extra hours? Has exams? There’s been a death in the family? Relax and read a book or a newspaper to expand your horizons a bit. Or better yet, get out of the house and go for coffee with your friends instead of nagging people on the internet. I think you could do with a bit of fresh air.
