The Darker Side of Facebook and Twitter

Social Networks

A short article advising caution when posting information on Facebook and Twitter.

There is no disputing the popularity of both Facebook & Twitter.  They are fun, and are a great way of keeping in touch with friends and family, no matter where they are in the world.

Whilst most people happily use both services openly and honestly, there are others who are devious and are prowling both sites for other reasons.

The obvious concerns are that there are paedophiles who are potentially using both sites, posing as children and trying to build friendships and relationships with real children.   Children using Facebook & Twitter should be careful as to what information they divulge.  If they do not know the person, (other than through linking up on Facebook), under no circumstances should they give out personal details such as phone numbers, their address or make arrangements to meet.

Women should also be vigilant about what information they place on Facebook or Twitter.  There are hundreds of young women who post numerous photos of their nights out, maybe posting photos of them dressed provocatively, posing raunchily with their friends.   The photos often show the pub or club that they are in, so it doesn’t take a genius to work out where they will be of a weekend.  It only takes for one sexual predator to befriend them, and you never know, they may decide to lie in wait for them one night.

There are also stories posted on the Internet, advising that people may be burgled, as they have posted details of when they are going on holiday and how long for.  Tying dates and times in with personal  information on Facebook e.g. the area where they live, and maybe posting photos of their house or car, could give criminals enough information to locate their home.

The purpose of this article is not stop people from using social networking sites, just a gentle reminder to make you stop and think more carefully about the information that you are about to share.

Have fun, but please stay safe.

I never give out my address or phone number. My teenage daughter uses Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. She never adds anyone she doesn’t know without asking me if I know who they are first.

I always believe you should be very cautious online regardless the gender. We all know about the online crimes.
