The Art of Making Friends

Social Networks

If you want to have more friends, and more page views, here is a list of things to consider.

By now most of us have received at least one or more messages in our inbox with links to check out other users’ work. Many people get annoyed quickly, and wish for a spam button in our community section.

Yes, Triond is a great place to publish work, and it is much easier than before to send messages to other writers on the site. However, there are quiet rules that applied in this situation. Not only on Triond, but anywhere on the internet, you need to know the art of making friends.

Exposure

So you have your work published, do you want to have exposure to your article? The first thing to do is spending times getting to know other writer’s work. For example, if you have a poem published, check out other poems on that same site, and leave comments. It doesn’t mean that you should only check out the “Popular Writers”. You can click on Authspot.com and find many other writers or poems. Your time is valuable to you, so is theirs! Your work is important to you, so is theirs.

Be a Friend First

As in any relationship or networking, you have to be a friend first. Carve out time to build a list of friends. Find people who have the same interests. By adding people to your profile, without even bother to check out their works, or commenting on their works, will yield little success in becoming friend with them.

Do Not Send Links in Message

Do not send your links of work to people’s inbox. It gets old very fast. Put yourself in other’s people’s shoes. Would you like to open your account and found a bunch of links from people you don’t know? Exactly!

Do Not Leave Comments with Links

You have to admit, it is cheesy to leave comments with your links! It is a scream: “I check you out, now you must return a favor!” Maybe they will do just that, return a favor, but not establishing a supportive relationship. You will lose a potential really good friend. You will be on the ignored list in the future!

Do not Submit Everything You Write

If you have a StumbleUpon or Digg account, do not submit everything you have published all at once. Your page will become an easy target to be marked as spamming! I found this out a hard way.

Helpful Resources on Triond

I had received many nasty comments on my poetry page lately, using language that is too dirty to even mention. That is fine because there is a delete button that I can use.

If I have offended anyone by not adding you to my friend’s list, please understand that I do not have all the time in the world. If this offended you, and bring you to leave nasty comments, then keep on doing so. I get the page view, and will delete your comment, and you are wasting your time!

This is good advice from someone who is very successful on Triond. I agree with not sending links to your writing. It can be annoying. I like to add anyone who is on my fan list. If they are a fan of mine, then they are a friend of mine!

Icy, you have some very useful information, I know it will be helpful for me. I never put anything of mine on Digg or Stumbleupon anymore. It took more of my time than it was worth. Take care.

nice article with lots of good advice,I particularly agree with-don’t send links and the last two paragraph, i’ve noticed that ones an article hit the front page there are people who start sending nasty messages.. thanks IC

    Dear IcyCucky,

Thank you for this great article! Sorry to hear you have received some harsh comments. I always try to put a positive spin on it and say to myself that these people must think your work is valuable or else they would not have taken the time to leave a comment!

    Blessings and best wishes.

    Sincerely,

    -Liane Schmidt.

There are many fine writers out there, so it is very hard to read all. I have three pages listing articles that I need to catch up on and it does seem overwhelming most the time.

Icy, I agree with you on two points, leaving our link in a comment or mail box is tacky, unless asked for. Sure it’s tempting, what writer does not want to be read or feel that they have something relevant to add?

I have found many writers who leave me links in my mail box, but have never signed a comment on one of my articles. It leads me to believe that they are not interested in sharing thoughts, just their own.

Another point you covered is nasty remarks left behind in comments. These are childish and have no place in our setting. They hide behind a fake name and climb back under their rock right after doing their dirty deed. Another page view for you.

Take care and thanks for some very good advice, as usual. You always leave the reader with good information.

  14. IcyCucky Says:

Thank you everyone for your comments.

Liane, I have just learned the art of spinning it around like you said. Thank you so very much!

Judy, my deepest gratitude to you for understand why I can’t add too many friends. For me, if I add someone, I must have the time to check out their work, or else what’s the use of adding?

  15. CHAN LEE PENG Says:

    Thanks Icy! Take care!

  16. Dee Huff Says:

Icy, these are really good tips. I’ll keep them in mind.

  17. Darlene McFarlane Says:

Very well said, Icy. Your point was put forth with diplomacy and wisdom. You raise some excellent points here. I don’t think people…especially new Triond members realize the amount of articles one member reads in a week. It would be impossible to get to everyone even though most of us would like to.

I have noticed there are a few “circles” here where like minded writers seem to stick together. Sometimes they may want to expand and attract new friends and readers and for this, you have given the most polite and un-invasive approach.

Thank you, this is an excellent article.

  18. Francie Says:

Icy, Your article made such fine sense! I look forward to all you write, although I am not on as often as before. When I am I go straight to my friends and you are so very loyal, always remembering to leave a kind comment! Your work has just become better and better! Thank you Icy!! Best always, Francie

  19. Lucy Lockett Says:

A very good article and pertinent to us all. It is hard to read all my friends work but eventually in my busy week it happens and I manage to get through it but recently I have not managed to get any writing done and that is beginning to bother me so I guess I’ll be on to that soon. Triond has very nice social circles which I appreciate tremendously.

  20. RJ Chamberlain Says:

Really valued this article Icy. Thanks a lot.

    Icy,
Great Article!!!!!!!!! You have saved a good many writers from making these deadly mistakes. One of my biggest fears is being branded a spammer. I want to gain friends not lose them! Some of the don\\\’ts at first look like a good Idea to get more views, but when you think about them, they don\\\’t sound like very good Ideas at all.I feel like I\\\’ve made alot of good friends here and I sure don\\\’t want to lose any of them. I try to read as much as I can of my friends content, and leave as many comments on they\\\’re work as time permits. Alot of times I work from open to close at the senior center. By the time I get home and have supper, its time to go to bed. Usually I work a little on my new content then I read and leave comments before I hit the sack, depending on how tired I am. Your article came at a very good time. Keep up the good work Icy!!! I enjoy reading your content, and commenting on it. Your articles are very informative. Love your writing!!!

  22. SunGoddess Says:

Icy, This is awesome! I am so sorry there are people here just as nasty and immature as there are on one of those social bookmarking sites. I would report them. We need to keep our community positive, submit only quality content, and not lower our standards.

You and a several others have offered outstanding advice for some of us “less active” in the writing department. I appreciate all the helpful resources! As for “friends”.. I would have to say when you make a friend on Triond, you have a friend for life. There is not pressure like Digg where on a daily basis, you could easily receive hundreds of shouts requesting your Digg (vote), and if you don’t Digg your friends submissions whether you like or agree with the article, they threaten to delete you as a friend. Those are not real friends. They’re arrogant and sometimes very bitter marketing folks.

I hope you and the others keep up the great job by publishing the best content possible! You are all awesome and I do appreciate your friendship. Now I wish someone would remind me to check my mailbox here! =)

  23. Anne Lyken-Garner Says:

You are so very right Icy. I agree with what you’ve said here. Too many people have started to send links, but this is not what we do here.

As you said, what’s the point of adding people to a friends’ list that is way too long as it is. If you have added someone as a friend I believe that you should have the time to read their work. If you don’t have that time, I think that it makes no sense adding more names. I am also at the point where I cannot add any more until I’ve gone through my existing list and have sorted out the active from the inactive friends.

Great article and keep up the good work.

  24. Rookie Expert Says:

Im sorry to hear about the nasty comments. I think triond should have people signin their name through their account and password check so that this will not happen. Fake names will be tracked.

Very nice article Icy. Havent been here as long as most of you, and havent even published a lot of articles, yet i have experienced the ‘inbox spamming’, random links that you never asked for.

Learned a lot about how people feel and react to adding friends and comments by this article and all the comments above me. Thanx.

  25. Cheryl Says:

You brought up a lot of great points. I’m also sorry that you have received harsh comments. You write really well so it’s hard to believe that people are so cruel to you.

  26. Sandra L. Petersen Says:

A very good article which could apply to any site on which you submit your work.

I have limited time to do any social networking and submit my work to several different sites. On each, I try to read and comment on those works which interest me the most and which I think are especially well done.

I’m sorry that some people think it’s funny to leave nasty comments. They are showing themselves for who they are deep inside. I’m glad that you befriended me, Icy.

  27. Redburn Says:

Thx a lot for the tips. A must use for sure

  28. Terri Lane Says:

Full of useful info. I’ll be following up your suggestions. Sorry you’ve had some bad comments. I’m afraid that some people have nothing better to do.

  29. Alexa Gates Says:

great article! I really hate it when people just send links to me…i’m like…okay..now i’m definitely not going to read your article :) As for bad comments…i hate them to..it goes to the golden rule, treat others like you would want to treat yourself… great article!

  30. NEELAM PANDEY Says:

As i m a new user of this site. so this article of urs really motivated me…thanx a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. PR Mace Says:

    Thank you,
I am new to Troind since March. You gave me some very helpful advice. I learned the hard way with Digg also. I am writing a book and applying for grant money. I needed to have some of my work published in order to apply for some grants. I was having no luck with magazines so I tried this. It is helpful to me to read what other writers have to say about my work. So far I have not had any negative comments. I am sorry that you have. Guess some people just like to be hurtful.

  32. Heart Stone Says:

    Icy,

I love this, it’s cool. This is a way of expressing how to make friends online or just by this site.

However, pardon me for not being online every time…in some ways… whenever I’m online…I usually read your article and the other friends whom I have friendship with since I joined.

    Keep up!

  33. Veronica Bright Says:

Thanks for the helpful information. I’m not new to writing but Very new to Triond. I’ll be back to read more. Still learning the ropes here.

  34. Tarra B. Says:

Icy, I agree with you 100%! I’ve received those messages that sound very generic like, “I like your work please view mine,” that seem to have been copied and pasted into a hundred messages just the same.

Thanks for always providing us with entertaining, informing, and interesting articles.

  35. swapna Says:
