Quit Facebook Day Sheds Doubt on Social Networks Dominance

Social Networks

Quit Facebook Day was June 1st, 2010. With almost 35,000 users vowing to delete their accounts on this day, is this social media network in trouble?

Lately, there’s no end to the discussions people are having about Facebook – that little social networking site that started at Harvard University and grew to envelop the globe under its influence. The question on so many people’s minds nowadays is “is my information safe on Facebook?” For those near 35,000 people who decided that June 1st would be their last day on the site, the resounding answer appeared to be no.

Now, most will argue that 35,000 people leaving a site with a dedicated client base of over 2 million users isn’t going to be hurt by such a small number of people. And they’d be right. The act of deleting one’s account probably won’t do anything to Facebook’s profit stream; but it will have more people asking more questions than ever before.

Here are five of the greatest news articles written recently that deal with many of Facebooks problems and issues:

San Fransico Chronicle – May 6th, 2010
Facebook begs users not to Quit

Los Angeles Times – May 13th, 2010
Reports Facebook staff scramble to respond to pressure on Privacy concerns

The Register – May 14th. 2010
Criticism leveled at Zuckerberg over his approach to user concerns

CNN – May 25th, 2010
“How to delete, deactivate your Facebook account”

SearchEngineLand – May 13th
Claims Facebook’s Active User Growth has dropped 25-50% as a result of privacy concerns

Quit Facebook Day will take another stab at getting people off the site, this time calling itself “Delete your Facebook Account day” on June 15th, 2010.
