This is a guide to using Facebook ™ and the different styles of users there are.
Facebook is a great tool for connecting and keeping in touch with friends. I was “on” Facebook for about a year I think before I really connected with anybody and I didn’t really understand what it was about. Once I made a couple connections however my friend list began growing exponentially almost and it became really enjoyable. Part of this network expansion was due to an old high school friend of mine requesting to be my friend and then I was exposed to all of the connections he had made and was making.
The spirit of Facebook is about connecting with people you know or have known. It is about creating healthy relationships based on some sort of familiarity or commonality. It is therefore an exceedingly healthy type of environment and friendly as well. There is a search box at the upper right hand corner of your home page which you may click on, type in someone’s name, and hit search. You will then get a list of people with that name. I have found long lost friends using this search tool and now we can keep in touch in a modest way using Facebook.
There are different styles of Facebook users. Some keep only a few, maybe ten to twenty, close Facebook friends while others have hundreds, many of whom they may know very little if at all. Therefore do not be discouraged if someone whom you have requested friendship from ignores you. It is very common and likely due to the fact that they prefer to keep a close knit group of direct acquaintances. Many such as myself however have a much more laid back approach.
Some of these lesser known friends are met through the games that are available to be played on Facebook. There are many role play and adventure type games on Facebook and it is advantageous to have a large group connected with you in these games. To gain members to your group you must seek out other users. This can be done using the group function on Facebook. Members can create groups seeking out other members for their “game” groups. Join one of these and request friendship so that you may increase the size of your “game” group. After you have successfully added a user to your “game” group you may delete them as a friend or keep them on just for the enjoyment of meeting and connecting with interesting new people from all over the world.
The group function on Facebook can also be used to support causes, keep up with certain establishments, ideas, causes, popular figures, and more. For instance you may become a fan of Barack Obama, or your local grocery co-op. You may then get updates from these groups and comment on them. Or you may join a group such as, “I Love America,” or, “I Love Russia.” Just another way to interact using Facebook.
Once you have made some friends on Facebook, Facebook begins suggesting others you may know based on whom your friends know. This is called the people you may know tool.
Another handy thing about Facebook is that there is a spot to place a link to your website. This is your area for free advertisement to your Triond articles. In the link or website section on Facebook simply place your Triond home page link. I will show mine as an example.: http://www.triond.com/users/Walter+Holstad
Comments can be made on photos, links, and other things that your friends have posted. When you comment on a photo, for instance, that a friend of yours has posted it allows all of your friends who are not necessarily friends with the person whose item you commented on to see this photo and the entire photo album generally that this photo is a part of. Therefore commenting on an item is a great way to share something interesting that one of your friends has posted with your entire group of friends.
There are different settings on Facebook as to privacy. The most lenient allows friends of friends to view your page. This means that people who are friends with your friends may view your Facebook page.
Facebook can be very addictive at first but don’t worry, you will eventually be able to tear yourself away from it. It is a great way to keep in touch and meet people and it is very fun and exciting. I hope these tips will help you decide to use Facebook or to help you use it in a more entertaining and fulfilling manner.
Good luck!
