Starting today, June 13th 2009, Facebook users have the option of choosing a username to have an unique Web address for their profile. Facebook argues that it will be easier for your friends to find you via web search engines like Google.
However, I see several disadvantages of this feature. First, it will be easier for stalkers to find you in the Web. Second, ones you select your username you can’t change it. Many users have published wall posts in the Facebook Blog saying that they have made a mistake and that now it will remain forever like this. Facebook hasn’t give any feedback on this. I hope they reconsider this because it is of humans to make mistakes. Third, although you type your URL you still need to log in.
On the other hand, there is a great amount of people that are very happy with this new feature. There is no doubt that Facebook is working hard to innovate and give the opportunity to their million of users to personalize even more their profiles. I wonder what new options will Facebook bring in the near future.

I haven’t signed up for mine yet, don’t know if I will. I have an extremely unique name so I doubt it’ll go anytime soon (if ever) but I don’t like how insistent the company seems on not being able to change your URL once you’ve picked it. Really? I understand making it harder than clicking a button but… First of all, who doesn’t have an e-mail address they made in high school that they regret (angelbabyxoxo90? sk8rboi360?) This generation of teens will have a FB URL they won’t use once they get to college. But most importantly, what about those of us who hope to someday legally take our husbands’ name? Hope I’m married by the time I find out I’m going to use my Facebook professionally?
