Myspace – Friend or Foe?

Social Networks

The most talked about social networking site.

MySpace

has become more and more popular. Whether it’s a topic on a talk show like Dr. Phil, or getting
mention in the news due to some teen kidnapping, or an artist promoting a new cd or movie saying check
out it on MySpace. Everyone is hearing about Myspace lately. Decided to check out this MySpace “so called”
networking friends community and see what it’s all about. Is it really that great or that dangerous? Well if you’re
in high school or younger it is weary but so is every other possible thing your teen can do online other than homework.
As a parent I would monitor it… like suggested in many other articles and news shows. As a young to middle age
adult it’s an okay place to network… although a lot of people on there aren’t really looking for friends… nor networking.
It seems like they’re just there cause everyone else is… but they don’t really want to bothered with new people. And on
the other hand there is also a lot of great new interesting people on there that you can get to know.

So what is MySpace? MySpace is a social networking website based in West Hollywood, California offering an interactive
network of blogs, user profiles, groups, photos, MP3s, videos and an internal e-mail system. According to Alexa Internet,
as of July 2006 it is the world’s fourth most popular English-language website and the sixth most popular in any language. It
is the most popular site in the United States. Although there are other sites similar to MySpace such as
Facebook
,
Bebo
,

Friendster
,
MyYearbook

,
Classmates.com
and
LiveJournal
. MySpace has over 95 million members
and has become part of mainstream pop culture. It’s also used my upcoming artists to promote themselves.

Setting up a MySpace page is a little time consuming depending on how much information you want to divulge. It’s a About
Me, Who’d I like to Meet, a large General section, Blog section, and Photos section you can post images. There’s also an
option to customize your page. This is when I wish I knew Html but you don’t have to worry. There are hundreds of MySpace
layout sites that you can go to and just copy and paste the codes into your page to get a page that reflects your personality.
With a little patience you can have your page completely done in about an hour or less. And you can always come back and
change it whenever you want.
