Medium is the newest social media network to hit the www. But is Medium any different to the others and do we really need another place to splash our lives for the World to see?
Medium – A New and “Revolutionary” Social Networking Site
You may have heard the name “Medium” being wispered around the social network hangouts. The world of facebook and twitter, instagram and pinterest, tumblr and myspace (well maybe not myspace!) are all abuzz with rumours of what this new kid on the social media block, Medium, is all about. Medium is the new creation from the folks at Obvious Corporation, the same people that launched Blogger way back in the 90’s.
Medium – What Exactly Is It?
Well no one is really sure what Medium is or rather what it is going to be. As of the 16th of August 2012, it has only been online for a matter of days and at the moment it is not open for public contibution. The creators of Medium themselves have said that they are not sure exactly what the finished product will look like as it will undoubtably evolve as users are allowed to add their own content. What I can say is that at present it looks like a pinterest type of setup where peoples submissions are grouped into catagories and “liked” or “shared” so that the popular posts rise to the top burying the rubbish. Now the creators of Medium are saying that they are trying to revolutionize social media and that they are rethinking publishing. So with these bold statements I assume that Medium will offer something more than a revamped version of Pinterest – I hope!
Medium – Do We Really Need It or Want It?
I may be the only one that feels this way, but I already feel like I have too many avenues to alert the World to where I am drinking coffee of a morning. I check in on Facebook, take a nice picture with instagrama with a warm vintage filter over it. Post the picture to my twitter and facebook account and add the picture to my tumblr page. If I have time I might post something to my Blog. Do I really need, or want, another social media outlet – even if it is new and different. NO! In fact I want less. And the truth is that Facebook contains so much of my life in it, including contacts etc that I am never going to let it go. So unless this Medium is able to transfer everything from facebook, and is better in some way, I don’t think I am going to do anything more that have a look out of curiousity. Medium may be revolutionary and new (probably not but maybe) but I just don’t have room or time in my life for another online life. Some will make time, and good for them. ultimately – you can make up your own mind, but in my opinion, It fills a hole that doesn’t exist.
