Is Twitter Ushering in a New Era of Social Responsibility?

Social Networks

The more visible we are while talking about ourselves, the more we start to wonder if its a good idea to talk about ourselves.

Google the phrase “John Mayer is a douchebag” and your first result will link you to an article where the man himself admits as much. Then, you can go see that he ranks at #4 all time on Tweetingtoohard.com, a site where people rank a tweeter’s arrogant musings amongst an array of other contributors to self-importance. The easiest way to get on the site is to say something that makes you sound like, well, a douchebag.

In talking with a few friends over the past week, both of whom have been guilty of a little too much self-indulgence, I’ve come to the conclusion that Twitter is really bringing society into a time where we have to be more conscious of what comes out of our “mouths.” Its easy to let your fingers fly off the handle when your typing in 140 character prose, but to look back on what you’ve said really takes self-evaluation to new levels. There’s not a lot of wiggle room, so what you say can sound really terrible.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve gone through past tweets and deleted some stuff I’ve deemed irresponsible. Yes,  I’ve found some of the things I’ve said to be a bit offensive to myself. At the end of the day, I want to put my best foot out there and if I’m just blabbering nothing but poppycock all the time, is doesn’t really add up to the greatest of posturing. Now, of course this image that I put forth into the social media space is one that I try to keep true to myself as possible, but its undeniable that in certain moments one feels the need to act on a gut urge that can seem unconscionable later.

Here we are (me and my friends), young 20 somethings detesting the own words that come out of our mouths. And, then there’s the celebrity who we love to hate, doing the same thing. Is it not time we all start thinking before we put forth words into this world?

The bare bones approach to Social Networking of Twitter is all part of its polarity and key to the reason you must watch what you say. Its the reason why people love it and hate it. There’s hardly any profile to fill out and you’re only allowed one picture. So, all you have to do is pretty much talk about things as they relate to you. This limited option is what makes certain people so detestable at times. There are no pictures to show your cool vacations or your hot girlfriends (elements that could go either way in defining your character). Instead, you’re forced into talking about these things. And, the more you try to paint a picture of your life, the more people will pick apart the words that you type. Its beautiful, really. Its the reason why I’ve paid so much attention to the site in the past few months. There are so many people sharing all sorts of information on so many levels.

So, be sure to watch yourself, because you probably are just another douchebag.

I am on twitter but cannot say I am a true fan. The world is becoming more openness with complete strangers. Is this good or bad? I guess with time we will discover the truth.
