Want to Know all the details of someone’s life? Add them as a friend on Facebook.
Facebook is a great place to keep in touch with family and friends. Sharing pictures, funny or interesting links, clever remarks or boring status updates. Aside from these, another Facebook trend is on the rise, The uncensored airing of dirty laundry.
It use to be that private things were kept private. If you were having problems with a spouse, it was kept between you and your spouse and maybe a couple of friends, at least until you figured out what was going to be done about it. Well, not anymore. Watch out, here comes Facebook.
Facebook status updates give you the opportunity to express how you feel the instant you feel it to everyone you have ever known, your parents, old flings, your children, your brothers and sisters, their children, even little Bobby shoemaker, the kid you sat next to in homeroom 20 years ago (and haven’t spoke to since). Not only can you tell everyone how you feel, you can use this opportunity to publicly declare how awful your spouse is. Winning you support and sympathy and bringing everyone to “your side.”
Then there are those who feel the need to tell us about every sexual exploit and every drunken night out and where and with whom they woke up. Sometimes with pictures, sometimes with video, but mostly with words.
I don’t know if everyone experiences the same phenomenon. My friends aren’t that interesting in person but, give them a computer, an internet connection and a bottle of tequila and I can’t stop reading.
Now, I’m not judging. I don’t know if this openness is good or bad for society, I leave those judgements to you. I’m too busy watching the show.

I like Facebook. Well I only say that because 500+ friends are a joy when they spam your wall and you feel important. Haven’t attempted to read those 212 notification in a few days…. won’t bother for another couple I guess.

Excellent article and post. I don’t like Facebook nor do I plan to have an account for all the reasons that you mentioned. I totally agree. It can cause a lot of drama and even break up relationships. As far as reconnecting with people from my past, I have no desire nor do I intend to. I wonder why so many people post their private life on their friends’ walls. Plus now I am not sure if you are aware but there is a feature on facebook that they can use your picture to advertise. more reason not to have a facebook account. lol
