Facebook reportedly ready to pay 10 million U.S. dollars (about USD 93 billion) to settle a lawsuit. The money will be channeled to social activities.
The lawsuit was originally filed by five Facebook users. They objected to the use of “Like” on advertising on Facebook.
Advertising in question is a kind of “Sponsored Stories”. Ads of this type will show the user when there is a friend Like clicking on the ad.
Plaintiff objected to the inclusion of their identity in advertisements without pay. Or, at least, they hope there is a way that their identities do not appear (opt out).
The use of one’s identity, and photographs, in an advertisement is protected under the law in California, USA, where the lawsuit was filed.
A class-action lawsuit that if passed could cover about a third of U.S. citizens. Compensation values were potentially billions of dollars.
Facebook finally agreed to terms in order to stop the lawsuit. “Money of peace” for 10 million dollars will be paid as a social contribution.
