Facebook or Myspace: Which Do You Prefer?

“US spending at MySpace is expected to fall 15% in 2009, to $495 million, while US spending at Facebook is projected to rise 9%, to $230 million. Consequently, MySpace’s share of US spending is projected to fall to 43.4% in 2009, while Facebook and other social network venues will increase their share.”

When MySpace was first created, I think the internet world fell instantly in love with it. It was a highly new and intriguing way to be able to not only share your interests, heart with the world and basically express yourself in a new fascinating way, it was an ingenuous way to reach out to the world in a faster more efficient manner. Not only did it help boost the careers of unknown artists, it gave many people the sense that truly, we’re not alone in the world. It appealed to people of all ages. It was a place to feel like a star for a moment and share things with your friends and loved ones in a way that you would not typically be able to.

However…………. Suddenly a new kid came to town, and his name was “Facebook.”

I must admit that when I first heard about “Facebook” I was not easily lulled into its new look, settings and rapidly growing appeal. I was already in love with MySpace, after all, you could choose your own backgrounds and you had a broader choice of fun html graphics you could add to your page or your friends’ pages giving it a much more interesting personalized appeal. Plus, I’d already devoted a great deal of time decorating it, adding friends, and more.

So why change?

And, then somehow, little by little I kept looking into Facebook. Many of my friends were on it, I kept seeing the name pop up and suddenly I was hooked (by word of mouth and intelligent advertising).

I think what draws me to Facebook nowadays more than MySpace is the saying, less really is more. I like the standardized appeal of Facebook. It gives you more of a safe, consistent and somewhat of a businesslike feel to it. You feel that it’s geared more to people who like that extra added feeling of wholesome sharing. MySpace seems to be more of a free for all and not as controlled and concentrated as Facebook. I’ve actually forgotten my MySpace password so even if I wanted to go back to my MySpace profile I can’t.

Now, I truly love Facebook because it allows me the ease and comfort to keep up with loved ones while sharing my writing without feeling like I have to deal with all these random variables I was faced with on MySpace. I do believe that MySpace still has a very important appeal: an ingenuous avenue for artists to share their work in a way that they can’t quite do on Facebook, with customized designs and so forth.

I guess I’m just a lady who prefers to focus on one thing (that has the same function as another thing) at a time and that’s why Facebook took over for me. I was curious, the hype drew me in and now I’m a big fan of it.
