Do You… “Hash”?

Lots of us use Twitter everyday to connect and communicate. Many have swarms of follower… err… sorry… "friends" that follow each and every update they post on Twitter. Do you find yourself "friendless"? Maybe it’s because you don’t "hash"! Let me explain…

Twitter is theoretically simple: you visit the site, you type in the box, you hit send/update/whatever… Why should you care? Your “tweet” is posted… Right? Wrong: you should care! Each tweet you post is lost in the sea of tweets posted by others… floating… in the digital seas of the Interwebs..! “But… But… But I am me! I am one and only!” you may say, still not having quite forgotten your one-and-onliness your mama was so proud of. Let me tell you a secret: it doesn’t matter how unique, how talented, how awesome you are (even if, at least for a minute, we actually believe that you are – ‘and we won’t, ’cause we’re better as our mama told us!), if you cannot be found. Look at it this way: some people go to talent shows and come out losers. At least, they tried. What do you do to be recognized? To be, well, “found”? Do you add hashes to your keywords? Well? Do you? Ah… Young paddawahah… I thought so…

“Hash”, for whom may not know, is what we call the character “#”. Twitter uses hashes to markup important keywords in each message, keywords that can be found when someone does a search for them. Yeah, it doesn’t matter if you mentioned “thatcompany” in your message, your message won’t be displayed if you didn’t “hash” it. And how’s that done? Just add a hash in front of it: “thatcompany” becomes “#thatcompany”. After that, when someone searches for it, your message will pop up. Well, among other messages that use the same keywords, but, hey, it’s better than being totally lost, ain’t it? So, from now on, try to reshape your posts in Twitter so that they’ll be “findable”. Yeah, you can still write about “how much you love your #apple #mac and love the new #snowleopard“, but do it this way. Do it smart.
