Assange spoke about the Internet and the power he wields but also pointed to the strength of social networks or the terrible situation experienced by the soldier Bradley Manning, suspected of having leaked the cables to the organization.

Julian Assange been debated for several hours in a chat with students at the University of Cambridge. In it, the founder of WikiLeaks, currently in the extradition proceedings for sexual offenses, discussed and addressed several hot topics today. Assange spoke about the Internet and the power he wields but also pointed to the strength of social networks or the terrible situation experienced by the soldier Bradley Manning, suspected of having leaked the cables to the organization.

The ex-hacker chat began discussing the ability that had its origins in social networks like Facebook for Governments used espionage:

Three or four years ago there was no rebellion in Facebook by Cairo. The first glimmer in the network were used for participants were questioned and imprisoned by the regime. Thus, while the Internet gives us the possibility to an unprecedented level, to know what governments do, is also the largest spy machine in the world

Assange maintains that the use of Internet technology has become more powerful to tyrannical regimes:

Internet is a technology that is not favoring freedom of expression, it is not promoting human rights. Rather it is a technology that can be used to establish a totalitarian regime intelligence of a size that we had never seen

To Assange, the appearance of WikiLeaks has helped trigger the ongoing Arab revolt also says the release of official documents U.S. diplomats have changed the dynamics in Tunisia, transforming the regime. Finally wanted to send a message of hope to Bradley Manning: “Our support for their plight can not be that high,” he concluded.

@ whoever posted this on Engadget.
You must obviously think Assange is amazing for find such a thing out. I’ve known this for several years now, like most things, the internet can be used for good (social networking) or bad (using the info from your google search and google maps + facbook info to know where you live and who you are what you like etc…)
But even if the government, i.e. USA want to build a Totalitarian government(not that they would), they cannot as the people will protest/revolt against such actions.
