A Twitter Guide

This explains what Twitter is and how to use it.

Twitter is a great service.  With it, you can let anyone anywhere know anything you want.  The general idea is very simple. You type anything less than 140 characters and anyone can read it and people who follow you will see it on their home page.  That is the basis of the service, but there are a few other thing that you can do too.

The first thing you will want to do is sign up.  Go to www.twitter.com and click sign up.  This is very simple and  only requires a username, password, and email address, which they keep private and email updates are optional.

The next step is the most important part.  This is where you tell the world whatever you want.  To make an update for yourself, just go to the home page, type what you want, and click update.  The main idea of an update is to tell people what you’re doing, but you can make it anything you want, as long as it is less than 140 characters.

The next part is where you find you friends and you can follow them.  When you follow someone, their updates will appear on your home page.  To find your friends, simply click the Find People button and search by name, username, or location.  When you find who you’re looking for, you can click follow to follow them.  You don’t have to just search for people though, often things like news organisations and other companies will have a Twitter feed.  Celebrities too could have one, but watch out for fakes.

Here are some other things you can do to make Twitter more efficient:

If you put an @ symbol before someones user name in an update, it is called a mention, it just means that update was directed at least partially to them.

You can direct message someone so that only they see the message by going to their profile and clicking message.

You can receive text message updates and make it so you can text your own updates to Twitter by going to settings then devices and verifying your phone.  They don’t spam you and you can turn text updates on and off for different users and you can set a sleep time for when not to receive updates.

There are a lot of other setting you can change, like adding a Profile picture and making a background for your home page, but I’ll leave that up to you to explore.
