Only a few days after the launch of its new task manager, Gmail has introduced a new feature allowing users to send free SMS messages through its integrated Chat. To activate the feature, visit the Gmail Labs page and scroll down until you see the appropriate listing.
There is another reason for all SMS addicts to celebrate as here is another option of sending free text messages as SMS using Gmail chat. SMS receiving and sending in the form of text messages has been enabled by Google within the Chat Client of Gmail. Users of Gmail that have chat enabled could send messages in text format within United States to any mobile number or cell phone free of cost through internet messaging client interface from Gmail.
This feature comes from Gmail labs feature as free and users must activate to enable with following steps:
Select Settings -> then Labs -> click on Text Messaging (SMS) under Chat
As soon as it is enabled, users could receive and send SMS Messages over online chat interface with Gmail. All you need to do is either mover over contacts with mouse or manually just type the phone number inside chat box. A contextual option of SMS will be shown. For the time being, free SMS sending is restricted within United States alone. A specific phone number is used by Google to send text messages from a reserve of 1000 phone numbers. Once recipient gets the text message, they can reply the same number with their message to reach the sender’s chat messenger. The Phone number that is tagged between each pair of people communicating does not change, even in future communications.
This way, Gmail allows saving of phone number in their address book for future SMS messaging by the recipient.
How to Send Free SMS from Gmail chat:
Just start typing Mobile phone number or into the search box in the chat window on the left, then select “Send SMS.” You can also select the contact you want to SMS first and then add their phone number.
