Successful online careers take knowledge, time and skill. Intelligent dedication to extracting reliable information you can use, without falling prey to large advertising circles is paramount to success. Avoid the pitfalls. Here’s how.

Talk about the cat chasing its tail!  Whew… How on earth do you jump on the ferris wheel of online information and better yet – why on earth would you want to?

How many totally useless websites and blogs  have you visited?  How long did it take you to realize that no one is giving up anything?  It’s just one long, endless array of the same regurgitated ‘wanna make money?’ promise without any meat…oh – and a ‘buy this’ at the end.

It can be horribly frustrating and really undermine your plans to contribute something of quality to the world online.

So where is the quality hiding and why can’t you find it?

  1. You are clicking on the top ten sites
  2. Your keywords are too general
  3. You aren’t certain which keywords will net the results you seek – if the data even exists.

That’s the major malfunction of popular, generalized search engines.  Here’s a great example:

Search words:  make money online

Most of us have tried that one and we recall the hours spent chasing links to sites and blogs whose only goal was to sell us what we know should be available free.

Follow these rule about looking for information you can truly utilize:

  1. Break it down.  Sure you want to make money but think about everything you must do before the money pours in.  Think about the website creation, the content, the products, the marketing, directing traffic to your site, the unique slant or niche that will set you apart.
  2. Once you have a ‘To Do’ list, look for education.  Go to nonprofit and education websites.  Research institutions that place it all online for anyone to take advantage of.  I’ll give you a hint:  MIT OCW.  Specifically, look at Online Search & the Battle for Clicks.  The fact is, you won’t make it without hours spent on valid education.
  3. Writing online and the sale of information is predominantly the greatest moneymaker.  It is also the easiest to access.  It doesn’t require a website or any expense at all.  So, how do you become profitable?  How do you develop an audience or regular writing jobs?  The answer is simple – you write.  You create blogs, submit material every day and practice to find what works.  You market your writing, publishing history and reputation – then you write some more.

It is a myth that millions of dollars are just waiting for you to arrive.  However, the competition is not as fierce as it may appear.  People are looking for good content, professional writers and consistency.  Give it to them and you will see your efforts bear fruit.
