Guitar used to be difficult to learn without an instructor. Now there are free resources all over the web. Here’s a guide to the best tools for learning guitar online.

Learning an instrument is difficult. Luckily, there are online tools that can assist with your troubles. Here’s a toolbox of the tools I’ve found to be the most useful to learn how to play guitar.

The Big Picture

This site is a general overview of all things guitar. It has links to music theory, beginner lessons, guitar anatomy, and some forums. This is a place for both advanced players and new players due to its scope of useful information.

Online Lessons

Guitar Noise contains guitar lessons in a blog format. This means you can work on a piece, and then a little while later a new lesson will be posted. Go as fast or slow as you please.

Community

This website focuses on community. It has numerous lessons and a forums to chat it up. You can also check out the shop for your guitar needs.

Exercise

Learn your notations and become faster on the fretboard. Here you can customize your exercise for the computer to randomize. Rock on.

Tabs

For all your tablature needs. Even has some lessons.

You need a place to keep all those tabs that you’re learning right? At Tab Basket you can add your tabs, rate them, and even find some lyrics and YouTube videos to go along with them.

As mentioned in the last resource, we have YouTube. The user-submitted video database with practically every song you could ever want to play. You can even find lessons.
