Transfer larger file sizes easily by zipping them before uploading them.
If you would like to transfer a large quantity of photos to someone via the Internet, the most direct and simple way to make the transfer is to upload a zip file of the photos to your Web site. However, there are some basic tools that you will need in order to upload a zip file to your Web site, including the following:
- Archiving software, such as WinRar
- A Web site, preferably your own domain
- Space on your Web site for large files
- Access to the FTP or file folder on your Web site
Because you will need these very specific items in order to upload files, it may not be possible for everyone to upload files. However, if you are equipped for the uploading, here is one way to go about zipping and uploading your files:
- Open WinRar (or your preferred zipping software)
- Navigate to the folder that you would like to zip and highlight it. In the image below, the folder is called “DCIM.”

- With the folder highlighted, click “Add” at the top of the screen
- This pop-up window will appear:
- In WinRar software, the default setting is to archive a folder into a .rar file, which is fine, too (but it’s not quite a zip file). In order to create the zip folder, simply click on the “zip” button in the Archive Format box. You will see the filename change in the Archive Name box.
- Click okay and the zipping will begin. This screen will appear to let you know the progress of the zipping.
- Once the zipping is complete, your Zip file will appear in the original master folder where your original folder existed
- Now, access the FTP (file transfer protocol) or file folder on your Web server. This part gets technical, so you may want to call your Web site host if you have never uploaded anything to your Web site. Every Web site is different and the FTP information varies by host.
If you use Dreamweaver, for example, you will want to “Place” the zip file in a folder on your site. The URL for the file would be the root URL (your Web site), forward slash, the folder name, forward slash, the file name. Thus, the URL might look something like this: www.mywebsite.com/files/DCIM.zip.
All you need to do is provide your friends and family with that URL. When they visit the URL, the download will start automatically.
Of course, as with anything Web related, there are many ways to achieve the same outcome, but this method is one of the simplest and most effective ways to quickly send your photos through cyberspace.
Remember: The upload time to get that zip file online might be rather long and you might have to contact your Web host to be sure you know how to access our FTP or file folder, but once you get the hang of this system, you’ll be sure to impress your friends with your upload skills!
