All you need to know about VPN and VPN service providers.

What is a VPN?

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private network inside a public network (for example the Internet), which is secure and private because of encryption and security procedures.

Why use a VPN service provider?

In one word: anonymity. If you use a VPN service, you are able to surf the web anonymously and are also able to use other internetbased services such as p2p programs and IM services anonymously.

What do you get from a VPN provider?

  • Strong Encryption — Some VPN services offer encrypted protocols for an added layer of security.
  • Server location — Many VPN providers offers their customer the ability to choose a server location. If you are a P2P user, the location isn’t very important (unless a tracker bans your country’s IP range). The VPN location is more important for personal website browsing & accessing geographical blocks; for example, you reside in the UK but want to visit sites which blocks IP ranges outside of the United States. A US VPN server will thus allow access.

What can you do with a VPN service?

Using a VPN to bypass a restrictive ISP in order to download torrents is only a small part of what you can do with a VPN service. Other features include:

  • Assign your computer a new IP address, hide your real IP to anonymize all web applications.
  • Bypass Skype and other VOIP blocked in your area or by your ISP.
  • Bypass blocked websites (that have blocked you or your country/geographical region).
  • Security & anonymity with a secure encrypted connection between your computer and the Internet.
  • Protect your wireless (Wi-Fi) connection at home or at public hotspots.
  • Virtual Firewall — Attacks are often directed at a known IP address.
  • Anonymizes you at work or at school even behind restrictive firewalls.
