Online Information Stealing

Why you should never give out information online.

If someone on a game says they want to meet you in real life, threaten to drop them off your friend list and tell them if they ever ask you again, you will ignore them forever. Why? They could be a forty year old living in their Mom’s basement. You never know. Never take chances with your identity.

If someone asks me for my information, generally I lie. Over time, they can ask enough questions to get a picture of your life. I also write down the lies I’m telling, so I can keep them straight. If you want to know the city I’m from, forget it. There’s a reason I don’t go by my own name in these games. Saying you think I’m a great person, and you would really love to meet me in real life is a great way to insure that I will send a note to whoever is running the game that you are asking for personal information and should be put to a firing squad immediately. And don’t tell me your information. I could care less, and you never know who may be listening.

I had a friend once who met a guy online and agreed to come see him. In a park. At midnight. Needless to say, she’s not a friend anymore. I don’t like to be seen with people who are that ignorant.

Most people in the online world do not care who you are, what you do for a living, or about your cousin’s pet hamster, Sparky. Keep your information to yourself, and I will do you the same favor, unless you want to hear a long story about my imaginary puppy, Spot. And trust me, I can go on for hours.

Happy gaming!
