Knowing is half the battle. Rules are there for a reason.
Ethics, rules, protocols, etiquette, guides, models or regulation. What ever you want to call it, the rules of the internet are not stated in black and white. There are hundred of rules since the internet is such a huge medium. Rules are discovered with experience when using the internet and cannot be properly and fully formatted into one place. So here are 5 important rules i have discovered so far and think are beneficial to share.
- There are no girls on the internet.
Okay, this is an exaggeration and does not actually mean that here are no girls on the internet. I see it as; the person you are talking to has anonymity. They could be men trying to lure you into things, I have seen guys pretending to be girls to benefit in online multiplayer games and even become peoples “girlfriends” and get their “boyfriends” to buy them items. The moral of this is be careful with your online relationships as you never know who is on the other side. - URLs can wear masks.
This means that when someone types out a URL (link) they can trick you buy hyperlinking a completely different website underneath. You can get tricked into websites that may look similar to another website, and steal your personal information or that website you expected to land In’s data. - Protect your copyright.
Before every image or video you post on the internet you have to think about ensuring people don’t steal your long hard work. Consider having minimal resolution on images and water marks on videos and images. People easily ignore copyright, so decide on the optimal way to display your creativity effectively while discouraging any of your content abuse. - Be cautions of Scams.
Scams are everywhere on the internet. From e-mails and spyware infections, you have to train yourself to keep a look out for people who are targeting you. Don’t believe in e-mail subscription offers you don’t remember signing up for. Don’t pay spyware infections to end thier abuse, it will encourage them to create more infections, and you couldn’t trust them from the beginning, so what stops them from taking your money too? - Have security software.
You can be attacked from software threats through the internet from all corners. You need an anti-virus and firewalls to protect yourself. You are standing in a no man zone when you are defenceless, internet viruses prey on victums who don’t have updated security. So even free security software that is trusted is good.
