Computer networks are very important components to modern businesses.
In fact, to say this is an understatement. If it weren’t for computers and computer networks, a business would, quite simply, not be able to function today. This may not be the case for some businesses where computer and associated technologies do not play a role (we struggle to think of one) but here we are considering SMEs and larger.
A business must connect all of its workstation computers to a network to share resources. Such resources may be printers, internet connections, and file servers. A business that wishes to allow employees to collaborate on projects must provide a means of sharing project file resources. These file resources are typically placed on a server, which is then made available to members of the network. Some computers may be prohibited from accessing certain files. This is a form of network security. For example, the accounting firm has little need for accessing the engineering plans from the engineering firm, just as the engineers have little need for accessing the accounting documents. By partitioning the file server into areas divided by file ownership and user rights, a network can be made more secure by keeping people out of the places they do not belong. This takes a little time to organise but the benefits are huge.
It is also extremely important to make sure you are keeping client information safe in and outside of your office. A big part of this is making sure you have the network security set up to account for this. If you don’t have security set up hackers could easily get into your files and personal information they shouldn’t see. This could mean social security numbers and other information being at risk. In order to set up security on your network, work with an IT company. They will be able to set up a bunch of codes so nobody is able to get into the system unless they are allowed to. This is going to be well worth it for the level of security you bring to your company. Make sure they constantly change things and continue to update so nothing is at risk. Most IT companies will be way ahead of you so there is no need to worry but it is well worth remember that this: Technology is always changing so you must keep up with it to be secure.
