Australia in Peril

The Australian Government has begun to “Blacklist” sections of the internet from Australian internet users. Known as the “Great Firewall of Australia” news, worry and action are quickly spreading both in the Internet and in real life.

Known widely as The Great Firewall of Australia, the Australian government has begun to effectively block websites from Australian Internet Users. What the AU Government deems ‘illegal’ or ‘inappropriate’ (note the clear difference between law and opinion) will be blocked.

The general word moving about is that this is being done for ‘the children’ and for ’safety’ reasons. Once the AU Firewall goes live (right now trials are scheduled to begin ’soon’) you can probably guess what sites might be blocked. Pornography, Torrents, Movie Links, TV links and the list can potentially go on.

But I must raise a question, as everyone would like Church and State to be separate it never truly is. What happens when and if the AU Firewall extends its reach beyond the even (dare I say this) marginally acceptable blocked websites? What if Religion, once again, got into the mix?

Websites pertaining to the Government’s opinion of ‘wrong’ would be blocked, websites that could potentially hold valuable information, opinions, entertainment and more. And if Religion was added to the mix, you can easily expect Satanism to be blocked and other sites that go against the jaded views of said Religion, anything that advocates something in a different light would be black listed.

The Internet, is a book, it is a book you can never finish because in it are the endless views and information of our race. Truth be told, it is the only book most of the world reads (statistically speaking) seeing as how a small percentage actually read books now a day. Through the Internet we become unified, this unification bound only by the basic hunger for knowledge. What happens when slowly but surely this book is burned? Not so different from The Dark Ages.

A more subtle threat, reaching beyond AU. Is that the American Government will catch wind of this (if they already haven’t) and probably will start something similar. Then the next country, and the next and so on so forth before we realize the Internet will be a shadow of it’s former self. The rich become richer, the poor become poorer and the slaves finally realize they are not their own.

You can view my thoughts as an overreaction, but I and many others out there who might share my opinion should warn. If you let them take it from us then they surely will. If change does not come, then our only hope will be her more chaotic brother. Revolution.
