Seven Google Easter Eggs

Search Engines

Who knew Google could be so fun? Check out these three fun things to do on Google.

You may know, or not know, that the people at Google.com aren’t the typical boring techies you’d imagine. They have a lot of odd and amusing little Easter eggs built into the website. Here are a few of my favourites:

Alternative Search Engines

Forget English, French, German and all the other countless language google is available in. What about Pig Latin? And Klingon?

Also, there are search engines with specialized logos. Just type google.com/{BSD/Linux or Microsoft.}

The Answer to Life

Google has an excellent calculator built into it’s search function – and for those familiar with The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, this will be amusing. Just type ‘answer to life, the universe and everything’ without the quotes, and you’ll be provided with the answer.

Also try ‘once in a blue moon’ and ‘number of horns on a unicorn’.

Gothic Google?

Not directly connected to google, but type ‘Google Gothic’ into the search engine, and press ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ to be presented with a wonderful, alternative search engine to meet your needs.

Chuck Norris

Again, not directly related but amusing nonetheless. Just type into google ‘find chuck norris’, and click ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’. See what you find.

Google Reads Minds!

It sure does. Just head over here and click the spinning circle and it will predict your search for you! Hopefully, if you concentrate hard enough, you’ll notice the April Fools Day footnote on the page.

Head Chef, Gmail

I actually didn’t notice this for a long time. Anyhow, as you know, Google’s Gmail, has paid ads that hover just above the ‘Archive’ ‘Report Spam’ etc. buttons. They are normally something that relates to recent messages in your inbox or recent news, “smart” advertising. (Mine reads: Reuters: Oddly Enough – Baby pronounced dead lives after hours in cooler – Aug 20″)

But, when you go into your ‘Spam’ folder, you’ll see that it’s replaced by links to recipes! Keep refreshing your Spam folder, and you could quite possibly build up a ‘Spam’ recipe repertoire. ‘Spam Skillet Casserole’ anyone?

Everyone Has One…

Everyone has a reflection, so why not Google? Check it out here.

So there you go, 7 of my favourite easter eggs. Search and see if you can find many more ;]
