Mystery Google: Another of Google’s Pranks?

Search Engines

I think not.

Recently, a new website called Mystery Google emerged. Not long after it’s release, people were already talking about it. The site is located at http://www.mysterygoogle.com/

Aside from the black background, the site is relatively similar to the one on the original Google (http://www.google.com/). Whatever you type into the search box at Mystery Google, you’ll get results of the previous person’s search.

For example:

- A search for “Radish”, delivered results for “aaaaaye”

- A search for “Hannah Montana”, delivered results for “ubersite.com”

- A search for “Lucky”, delivered results for “i can only imagine the look on some of your faces”

And other unrelevant topics.

However, there are some consistant results,

- “Mystery Google” and “What is Mystery Google” redirects you back to the same page, but with the text “That is the site you are on” above the search box.

- Leaving a blank in the search box also redirects you back to the same page with “Please don’t type gibberish.” above the search box.

There was no immediate reply from Google to a query from AFP about the site. Like the previous Google easter eggs (UFO, Bar codes, Shooting stars), there were rumours that Mystery Google is just another one for the coming Halloween.

From what I know from examining the source code of Google and Mystery Google, I noticed that Google’s main page does not have HTML comments in their code, but Mystery Google does. This might be enough evidence to prove that Mystery Google is not from Google.

So far, there were no viruses attacks from Mystery Google, so you don’t have to worry if you’re curious or want to know more about it. Like said above, the site is located at http://www.mysterygoogle.com/
