With search engine algorithms changing, does the keyword still hold as much importance.
Keywords used to be the great mystical key to search engine optimization (SEO). However, these days are they that important and do the top search engines use them any more?
Things have changed since the early days of the search engine. The use of keywords and optimizing your website pages with keywords was a key factor in determining page ranking success and bringing in traffic. These days the whole keyword density issue does not seem to be as important as it once was. The way search engines categorize and index pages is different now. Keyword stuffing, where a keyword is overly repeated on a web page or even hidden within the page, is one of the reasons why the algorithms of the search engines has changed. They now look for good quality links to your site. In other words what other people think of your site seems to be far more important than the use of keywords.
So if a good quality site recommends your website you will be looked on more favourably by the search engines. The tip these days then is to build a good quality website that contains rich content easily readable and informative to the visitor. The power of the article is gaining strength and if you write well then you will do well.
Keywords are not useless though, far from it. They are still important for your visitors to firstly find your site and secondly keep the article or web page on topic. What you want to do therefore, is to place your keywords naturally into your article and not to stuff it with the same keywords which will destroy the credibility of the content. Let us look at two paragraphs that I have made up for this demonstration.
“Money Magic is a great product and Money Magic helped me earn a fortune. If you are interested in Money Magic then visit the Money Magic website where you will see Money Magic products that can make you rich like Money Magic did for me.”
“Trying to make a living these days seems to be getting harder and harder. No matter what you do you can never seem to get ahead. One product that helped me was Money Magic. The team there really showed me how I could change my life around. I would highly recommend this product because it really worked for me.”
You can see that the first paragraph has a high keyword density for the term “Money Magic”. It sounds like a sales pitch and reads unnaturally and will turn readers away. However, the second paragraph has a much lower percentage. Yet the second one is more natural and is more likely to lead to a sale. The second paragraph is also more visitor friendly and is far more likely to get a recommendation than the first one.
So keywords are important, but these days content rich pages that inform and inspire are becoming more valuable. The way we write is becoming more paramount rather than what we write. Use keywords to focus your article and allow people to find your pages but above all write for your visitors and not for the search engines.

Thanks for your article John. I saw your link on Twitter.
I would like to add that keywords within the anchor text of backlinks and internal site links are important. If you only receive incoming links that only contains your website address and not other types of relevant words, then you will be found primarily for your name.
Keywords within article content, as you pointed out is also crucial, as long as you are not keyword stuffing. Selecting 2-3 keywords per page will help to create an overall keyword theme that writers can focus on. Links to that article with the keyword theme within the anchor text will help it rank.
