Search Engines

Helping you get the most from your blog or article by using Google’s keywords tool. Profit and views will abound.

We all want traffic to our blogs and online writing. It doesn’t matter if you write for profit or pleasure, you still want people to see your work, and using Google’s keywords tool, I am going to show you how to achieve just that.

What is the Keywords Tool?

Put simply, the keywords tool tells you how many people on Google are searching for a given word, and how many websites are available for those keywords. How many times have you written a blog only to find that fifty million odd people have already written something similar that knocks your writing back to about the 13th page? I know I have on many occasions. By using the keywords tool, you can see how much competition there will be on a given subject.

Where Do I Find It?

You can get hold of it here. You can also type “Google Keywords” into the address bar of your Firefox browser (assuming you use Firefox).

How Do I Use It?

It’s fairly self explanatory. Enter all your keywords and phrases, one to a line in the correct box. Then enter the CAPTCHA code and click “get keyword ideas”. Remember, if words are on the same line, then the tool will treat them as a phrase. By putting different words on different lines, you can easily check multiple keywords at the same time.

The resulting list shows search terms that have been used over the past month which fit to your keywords, it shows how many times they have been searched for, and how much competition you will have. If the blue bar is full, then that keyword is featured in MANY websites, and you will need to work very hard to get ranked high on Google. On the other hand if the blue bar is short, then there are far fewer websites and using good techniques and publicity, you can get on the front page far more easily.

I’ve identified a search term that has a lot of requests, and little competition. What now?

You’ve found the holy grail of blogging and writing. The key now is to use that keyword or phrase as much as possible in your article. Obviously don’t spam it to the point where your writing makes no sense, but use it as often as possible. If you can, work some of them into the title too and also tag the blog or article with those keywords. This will make your work light up like a Christmas tree on Google if done right.

So Will This Make My Blog a Page One Piece?

Sadly not. Google’s formula also uses other criteria such as number of hits, number of one way links pointing to your blog and so forth. You will still need to publicise your article in other ways, such as linking it to friends, sending it to site sharing services and so forth.

Are there Alternatives?

Yes. There are many tools for checking search engines (not just Google), some free some you need to pay for. Market Samurai is a good one and highly recommended by the thirty day challenge. A quick search on Google will reveal many others.

Anything To Close On?

Yes, remember that blogging for profit is a long and hard road, and blogging for fun can be annoying when idiots leave negative remarks all over your work. The only way you’re going to get masses of traffic is to keep working at it, keep reading advice, keep improving your writing, and keep building your fan base. There’s no “magic strategy” that will make your blog or article an instant hit, there is only time, effort, and patience.
