Search Engines

Many individuals experience difficulty in achieving a high-ranking within the search engines because their links, although in theme are compatible, are linked in a most indiscriminate fashion. Thus, what may occur is that while the site owner may be achieving a high degree of success with his or her targeted keywords, such is not the case when it comes to his or her special keywords. Or, he or she may do okay in the rankings with special keywords but not so well with their targeted keywords.

Normally, the webmaster or owner has linked in a way, although complimentary, is lacking in organization a bit.  A way to solve this problem is through a technique called siloing.  There are two kinds of siloing:  Virtual siloing and Directory siloing.  Herein, I provide information on Directory siloing and how it can solve the problem random linking may cause.

As many individuals and organizations are now aware, when working with the aspect of virtual marketing: The objective of search engine optimization is to improve their ranking(s) within the search engines through the use of keywords strategically placed within the construction of their site.

Many site owners may discover that he or she are doing well in the rankings as far as their targeted keywords are concerned, however, not so well in accordance with specific or special keywords and phrases. Or, they rank okay as to specific keywords; however, are severely lacking in the rankings when it comes to their targeted keywords and keyword phrases. Therefore, the question to be answered is: What is to be done in regard to this dilemma?

The answer to this concern is by way of a strategy referred to as directory-based siloing. The technique is a resolution to the problem as it allows the webmaster and/or website owner to achieve a higher placement on the search engines for either his or her targeted and special keyword phrases. This is accomplished by means of vertical linking.

Let us back up a minute and determine why a site owner may be well-ranked within the search engines for one set of keywords (such as targeted keywords) and, not so well with his or her other set of key words: special keywords.

Most generally, this problem occurs when the pages within the site are not linked well in accordance to theme. When pages are linked without much discernment or organization, even though somewhat complimentary to each other, a lower than expected ranking will be the result.

Directory-based siloing will create relationships by using directories to categorically group pages of similar content.

Relationships between the site’s pages are established by grouping the site’s pages that provide similar content within an individual directory.

The names associated with the site’s inner pages determine the subject matter as it relates to the directory. Therefore, the overall theme of the directory is manifested within the construction of the directory you create.

When building a directory silo you will need at minimum, five pages of “supporting” text. The text will be relative to the subject-matter the directory addresses.

Additionally, keep in mind that directory silos must be well-organized and extremely structured.

The following narrative will provide you with the steps needed in order to successfully create a directory silo as it pertains to search engine optimization (SEO).

In our example we will use the associate items of hammers and nails.

  1. Create a directory for the theme: Hammers;
  2. Create another directory for the theme: Nails;
  3. Within each of your directories provide highly informative content as it pertains to each of your themes and in support of the aforementioned themes;

In order to provide a bit more clarity to the matter, let us back up a minute and let us suppose you have two types of nails: Regular standard nails measuring a particular length; and “roofing” nails. Categorically, these different styles of nails would fall under the “heading” or your directory themed: “Nails”.

Okay. Now with that said, let us further suppose you would like to place a link between the “Nails” directory and the “Hammer’s directory.

In example, you have a webpage within the “Nails” directory that provides some discussion as to an application for a particular type of nail and a recommendation as to a good quality hammer to use within the process of this application.

Instead of linking a page discussing a particular brand of nails to the complimentary and recommended brand of hammer page, you would instead link to a “Hammers” landing page.

The reason you are doing this is should you have multiple types and manufactured brands of nails along with various kinds of hammers you are avoiding convoluting your theme.

Do you see how this could happen through indiscriminate linking?

With links going between different manufactured brands of hammers and nails, although complimentary to one another, you are in effect creating a situation wherein it will be most difficult for the search engine robots to determine the theme of your site. Indiscriminate linking as just described does not permit your keywords to predominate.

By creating a directory, as I have just described, you are resolving the problem multiple linking can cause between various manufacturers of complimentary products.

The solution is that instead of running multiple links back and forth between pages, you are creating two separate and distinct categories: “Hammers” and “Nails”.

The two distinct categories of which I refer are also known as silos thus the name derivative of the concept of siloing as it relates to search engine optimization.
