Experts argue that the amount of information transmitted through the Internet doubles every six months. This astounding fact may explain why we sometimes easier to get into the Internet and find interesting information there, than to see lying on the desk reference book, dictionary or a book on physical media.

Today we perceive search engines as a given and did not reflect, that without them the millions of documents across the network would have been a bunch of kiberhlama and never would have found their target.

Meanwhile, the first project aimed at addressing the problem of how access to information resources on the network appeared not so long ago, in April 1994. It was then kicked off the site Yahoo, which contains a directory of resources, links to which are grouped according to subject matter. Today this method of searching for documents is hopelessly outdated, since even the most modern directories containing huge amount of resources that provide information only on a very small part of the Global Network.

For comparison – the largest Web directory DMOZ (or Open Directory Project) contains information on 5 million of resources, while the base of the Google search engine is comprised of more than 8 billion documents!

If we talk about full-fledged search engine, the first project was WebCrawler, which appeared in 1994. A year later, there were search engines Lycos and AltaVista.

Today the leader of Google appeared in 1997. At the same time was announced and the Russian leader Yandex. Currently, there are plenty of search engines. But mostly they use databases and search algorithms are the three main Google, Yahoo and MSN Search.

Let’s talk more in detail about the most exciting players of this wonderful, I can even say vital market.

Google – the company was founded in 1998 by Stanford University graduates Sergey Brin and Larry Pei jam, which used to rank documents technology PageRank. The technology reduces the definition of “credibility” of a particular document based on information about the documents, link to it. That is, the more documents referenced in this document and what they are authoritative, the more authoritative the document becomes.

Quantifying the value of the credibility of the document is taken into account when determining the relevancy of the document the specific request. At the same time Google has applied for determining the importance of the document not only the text of the document itself, but also text links to it. This technology has enabled him to secure the issuance of more recent results, in comparison with other search engines.

Due to this, Google has the lead in various polls on such parameter as the user satisfaction of search results is undoubtedly the most important indicator for the search engine. This gave impetus to the transformation of the campaign in that giant of the Internet market, what it is today.

Yahoo – the second most popular in the world and first in the history of the search engine. This system was created by David Filo and Jerry Yang in April 1994goda.

Yahoo combines keyword search and search using a hierarchical tree partition.

The current development of Yahoo can be defined as the movement into online interactivity. For example, they introduced one of the first toolbar for the browser Firefox. This tool helps to use the search engine Yahoo, without going to the official site, but only using functional buttons.

As for Russian search engines, their main difference from the foreign is that they support the Russian morphology. To date, the domestic market there are about two dozen search engines, but the vast majority of users working with only a few. We consider only the largest.

Index – was launched in the second half of 1997. The main distinguishing features of the search engine at that time were checking the uniqueness of the documents (excluding copies in different encodings), as well as key features of the search engine is Yandex, namely: Consideration of the morphology of Russian language (including the search for an exact word-form), the search given the distance ( including within a paragraph, exact phrase), and an elaborate algorithm for estimating the relevance (the appropriate response request), taking into account not only the number of query words found in the text, but also the “contrast” word (the relative frequency for a given document), the distance between words and the position of words in the document.

Today the index has a powerful search inside the robot, allows users to search on various criteria.

Interestingly, the word index invented one of the main and oldest developers search engine. “Yandex” means “language index”, or if in English, “Yandex” – “Yet Another indexer”. Although 4 years of public existence Yandex any other interpretation. For example, if the word “Index” to translate from English the first letter (”I” – “I”), you get “Yandex”.

Poisk@Mail.ru – one of many projects of the company, which appeared some time after the birth of the portal Mail.Ru.

Himself portal Mail.ru is a leading free email service, giving its users a mailbox of unlimited size with protection from spam and viruses, translator, spell checker, an archive for storing photos, and more.

History of this popular portal has started in 1998, when programmers working in Petersburg office of the American software company DataArt, have created new software for e-mail web server, which is later expected to sell to western companies.

To test the service, it temporarily laid out in the open access for Russian users, and the service suddenly became rapidly gaining popularity.

February 20, 2001 a merger of two major players on the Russian Internet market, companies and Port.ru netBridge branded Port.ru.

The combined company was born, which immediately took a leading Russian Internet – holdings in market share and reach.

Rambler – the oldest Russian internet search engine, launched in 1996.

At the initial stage contained a total of 100 thousand documents. “Rambler” was not the first domestic search engine, but in its first year (when the entire Russian website with a reasonable degree of likelihood indexed “by Rambler,” “Sic”, “Russian search engine, as well as the Swedish and California AltaVista) made the main burden search queries.

The second version of “Rambler” began to be developed in the summer of 2000. It introduced the function, has long existed in the competing systems. It takes into account the coordinates of words trained in the strict and fuzzy morphology, binds search the catalog, which is used as the Top100 (http://top100.rambler.ru/), groups the search results for sites looking for the numbers.

With regard to the modern search engine rankings, according to research ComScore, conducted in July 2009, the world was made more than 113 billion searches. For comparison, a 41% increase compared to last year.

The share of Google sites totaled 76.7 billion of them. That is, the company currently holds 67.5% of the global market.

In the second place in popularity among global search engine sites Yahoo – 8,9 млрд queries or 7.8% of the market growth – 2%.

In third place was the Chinese search engine Baidu to 8 billion search queries and the proportion of 7%.

Russia’s “Index” in the world rankings is the eighth position. But if we talk about our country, here he is leading and has 57.1% market share.

Third place belongs to the following Google Poisk@Mail.ru – 10,2% market share.

Next comes the Rambler.

The combined share of transitions, handed out by these systems on own site, in the first half of 2009 amounted to 96,5%.
