For those of you that are wondering what is Google Wave and what is all the hype about, I’ll attempt to break it down in very simple terms.

According to Google it is “a personal communication and collaboration tool”.

In other words, imagine email, instant messaging, files sharing, social networking and collaboration software in an all-in-one easy to use interface.  So as you can imagine, this is why it is being called the next wave (excuse the pun) in internet communication.

What’s Cool:

• Drag and drop content sharing: This means no more browsing for files to add an attachment to your posts. Share documents, files and media with other users as if you were all sharing the same desktop.

• Synchronous postings: This is like live email, where you can edit and update posts in real time. Not just your own posts, but others in your group.

• Live Collaboration: Files, posts and documents can be updated and edited by anyone authorized in your group and changes are seen live as they happen.

• New Web Experience: Wave will change the way we view and think of the web. It will look and feel more like a desktop application and less like a browser experience.

• Open Source/New Protocol: This means the code in which Wave is written is available to all web developers, so expect thousands of cool new apps and programs. With a new internet protocol created and backed by Google, the web itself is about to be completely changed.

With all these cool new features, open source code and the marketing power of Google, expect internet user to embrace this new technology very quickly. I doubt this will be just a fad technology, but instead as industry changing as the iPhone was for Apple.
