Thursday, Google began releasing an SMS-function in Gmail. In Gmail, the e-mail service by Google, users will now be able to SMS. These SMS conversations will be visible in the chat windows.

When the user activates the SMS function (which is currently still in beta phase), the user can enter a telephone number using the chat window, and then he can start sending SMS messages. An other advantage to this new function is the possibility to receive SMS messages. Google couples a telephone number to your Google-account.

This new function is available through Google Labs, the testing platform of Google. Through this platform users can test the newest features released by Google.

I haven’t read all the details of the new feature, but I certainly hope it isn’t going to turn into a new form of spam. I don’t do instant messaging, but I’ve never found a way to turn it off in gmail. Maybe I should take another look, just in case.
