Choosing Keywords – Seo Basics: Writing Essentials Nine

When I did not know much about “SEO basics”, the very term would give me jitters. But now I realize that it is a fancy word for something you can easily do. I have put together a SEO basics guide with images, to select good keywords.

Please DON’T lose your unique style and overuse the keywords. SEO basics are meant to help you and not take over your writing. SEO basics can’t get you hits if good research/content is missing.

How to choose Keywords?

A) SEO basics - Image 1: Open Google AdWords Keyword Tool:  https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

B) SEO basics – Image 2: Select-‘English’ and ‘All Countries and Territories’. Enter your article-subject (Mine is Angora rabbit ), fill in the characters below it and click ‘Get  Keyword Ideas’ button.

C) SEO basics – Image 3:  A list of popular keywords will be displayed.  Notice the second red-highlighted box. We will change the settings of  ‘Global Monthly Search Volume’ and ’Match Type’=Broad, in the next step.

D) SEO basics – Image 4: Select ’Match Type’ as ‘Exact’. Click on ‘Global Monthly Search Volume’ to sort in descending order.

E) SEO basics – Image 5: Google AdWords Keyword Tool gives a list of ‘Additional keywords to be considered’ too.

F) Critical step to choose keywords: There is no hard and fast rule here. Logic will guide the way. From Steps D) and E):

1- Note the most relevant keywords (per your subject), having at least 1000 hits under ‘Global Monthly Search Volume’ column.

2- Notice ‘Advertiser Competition’ (second column). Eliminate keywords that have high ‘Advertiser Competition’  (Green bar is full/almost full and white portion is less).

Let us assume that at this point you have 6 keywords.

G) SEO basics - Image 6:  Open Google.com homepage: http://www.google.com/

For each of the 6 keywords, enter the keyword in QUOTATION MARKS and then click ’Google Search’. ( I searched for “angora rabbit”.)

H) SEO basics – Image 7:  For each of the 6 keywords, note the total number of results that you obtain for the search.

We get 107,000 results for “angora rabbit”. Thus, 107,000 web-pages have the term Angora rabbit in them. 107,000 is the ‘Competition’ for ‘Angora rabbit’.

I) Final calculation: For all the 6 keywords you have selected, calculate:

 (‘Competition‘)/(‘Global Monthly Search Volume’  and‘Match‘=Exact)

For “angora rabbit” it is (107,000)/ (18,100)= 5.91

I generally use keywords that give a value less than 50.  Out of those 6 keywords, further reduce the number of keywords. I normally use 3.

J) Using the Keyword in your Article: Choose and use 1 main keyword from your final keywords list.

- The title.                                                            - The article description.

- The first sentence of the body.                         – The first and last paragraphs.

- Sprinkled in the body. Keep the keyword density between 3-4.5 percent. No more.

- Sprinkle the other 2-3 keywords you have selected in the body too.

Once you get a hang of this, SEO basic keywords research will not take you more than 5-7 minutes. It is not complicated at all. SEO makes your article more accessible to the world outside this site and so, it may take some time to show results. Good luck!

Why would you want to do keyword research in the first place?

We have trained thousands of businesses last year, and that’s still the number one question on the minds of most marketers or business owners.

    Here’s the answer:

What would it mean to you and your business to KNOW exactly how many people are looking for your product or service TODAY and everyday?

You see, most people don’t know the name of your company, so they don’t type in “Jack and Jill Real Estate” into the google search bar.

However, people DO know what they WANT so they may type in “house for sale in toronto”.

If you sell houses in Toronto, and you are Jack and Jill, would it make sense for you to know just how many people type into a google search engine anything about “real estate in toronto”?
Would it make sense that you be found in the top rankings of a google search engine under the keyword phrase “house for sale in toronto?”

You could find out RIGHT NOW if it makes sense! That’s the beauty of the internet. Everything is trackable.

All your research is already online. You don’t even need a high school education to do this research. If you can follow a video tutorial, and you are committed to learning, you are on your way! (most premium keyword search tools have excellent tutorials)

Any marketer that is not doing their keyword research, is totally out of the loop, because I could guarantee, your competition is already doing it’s homework. And you can too!

    Here’s a couple of tips:

When we “experts” tell you to do keyword research, we don’t actually mean, go find (one) keyword and smack it all over your website. You know that! But your still not quite sure where to begin.

Yet, time and time again, people “guess” at their keywords, and put them all in the wrong places! Or they don’t use them at all. Don’t waste your time. Don’t guess! And don’t build websites that are not optimized. That’s like posting a flyer in the rainforest! Who will find it?

It’s easy to take the first step. Do your research. Find highly relevant “keyword phrases or longtail phrases” related to your product and or service.

    Tips:

i.e. If your a pianist selling piano lessons, don’t use the word “piano” as a keyword. Go for a more longtail keyword phrase as “advanced piano lessons”. The goal is to find keyword phrases that are relevant to your target market. If the keyword phrase gets 300 searches a day, and has low competition, depending on your business vertical, it may be worth looking at.

Most keyword tools will teach you that in order to be successful with your keyword phrase, you need to find a keyword phrase that have lots of searches, but low competition. The better targeted your keyword phrase is, the better it will work for you.

(if you want to beat your competition there are other factors at play here. We can’t teach you that in a blog post.

But, the idea here is to get you excited about knowing what people are looking for and learning exactly how your buyer is looking for you right now. Keyword research is a GREAT place to start!)

Here are other tips you need so you don’t spin your wheels:

    a) How many keyword phrases (long-tail) can you use on your entire website?

Answer: Unlimited. (the more pages you have, the more you can use).

    b) How many keyword phrases can you use per ONE web page?

Answer: I recommend 1 keyword phrase per page – for beginners. When you are better you can do a few more things)

    c) How many times should you use your keyword phrase on your page?

Answer: Go to the google search bar and google “keyword density” and you’ll get a number of experts with different opinions. No one can be 100% certain. We’ve enjoyed high rankings with everything from 2% to 5% keyword density.

ie. if we have 100 words on a web page, the keyword phrase is repeated up to 5% or lower in strategic areas.

*Disclaimer. there is more to it then that, but I wanted to give you an idea. Again, where you put the keywords is important.

The rule that content is king still applies.

    4) Where do you put these keyword phrases?

Answer: There are a few places where beginners can put their highly targeted good keyword phrases that may have an immediate impact on their ranking depending on your business vertical. ie. if you are in the nanny business, and no one else is using search engine optimization, just using these tips could potentially be magical for you. Get started today!

    Big tip right here!
Start by putting your keyword phrase in your page title tag. There are other critical places, but for newbies, that’s a good start!

On that note, the Google Adwords tool has its place in the market. I think its important for beginners to know that there exists other premium keyword search tools – which in my humble opinion, offer more critical information that one needs to make a decision about using a specific keyword phrase or not.

I know that was an information dump. Hope this helps!

Congrats to SOHO for choosing to promote education based articles – this is a highly relevant topic to all marketers.

Make it a new year’s resolution to learn keyword research! And go to the next step after that.
