A Complete List of the 38 Major Internet Search Engines

Search Engines

Just because Google is one of the largest search engines on the planet doesn’t mean you can necessarily find what you’re looking for with it. There are so many search engines on the internet that it can sometimes be frustrating deciding which one you should use. That’s why I’m going to list some of the alternative search engines you can use in place of Google.

Whether you’re looking for a quick recipe for buffalo chicken wings, or you want to know the latest science fiction television shows, search engines will always be your best friend. We all know about the popular sites such as Google, Live and Yahoo!, but what about the not-so-popular ones?

When submitting a URL to a not-so-popular search engine, that link has a higher chance of being shown within the first 5 pages of its database, meaning your content will get seen more often by viewers.

Here is a complete list of the 38 major online internet search engines (as determined by their annual viewer statistics), sorted by their year of debut:

1993

  • Aliweb (“Archie” Like Indexing for the WEB) – “Archie” a shortened form of “Archive”

1994

  • WebCrawler
  • InfoSeek
  • Lycos

1995

  • AltaVista
  • Open Text Web Index
  • Magellan
  • Excite

1996

  • Dogpile
  • Inktomi
  • HotBot
  • Ask Jeeves

1997

  • Northern Light
  • Yandex

1998

  • Google

1999

  • AlltheWeb
  • GenieKnows
  • Naver
  • Teoma
  • Vivisimo

2000

  • Baidu

2003

  • Info.com

2004

  • Yahoo! Search
  • A9.com

2005

  • MSN Search
  • Ask.com (formerly Ask Jeeves)
  • Good Search

2006

  • Quaero
  • Live Search (formerly MSN Search)
  • ChaCha
  • Guruji.com

2007

  • Wikia Search

2008

  • Powerset
  • Viewzi
  • Cuil
  • Boogami
  • LeapFish
  • Musu

It’s interesting to note that certain search engines don’t have their own databases, but rather display the results gathered from other search engines. For example, the Ask.com and HotBot engines commonly crawl the databases of the Google, Live and Yahoo! engines when displaying search results. So if you submit your URL link to Google, Live or Yahoo!, you don’t need to submit it to Ask.com or HotBot.

Most of the search engines that made their debut in 2008 are still in their BETA stages. You can only imagine how hard it is to start up a new engine, competing against opponents who have existed for years and have already garnered a reputation from the public. Nevertheless, each engine is for the most part unique in its construction and the way it obtains results. For instance, a link you submitted to Google might appear on page 20 of its search results, whereas on Info.com, your link might appear on page 1 of its search results.

So there you have it – all of the 38 major search engines on the internet! Make sure to check them out when promoting your articles to attract more visitors!

Boogami.com also has a social networking site that is also growing very fast – much better than the other established websites boogami.com/life – the social network combined with the search engine is attracting a lot of traffic – also offers members ways to make money – how cool is that?
