I’ve been a member of Squidoo for about 8 months.  In that time I have become a Giant Squid and an angel Squid.  Basically, that means I have learned a little something about Squidoo.  It also means that I can see the mistakes people make while using Squidoo.

Squidoo is an extremely powerful marketing tool.  What most people do not realize is that it is also a very powerful community.  If you are going to take the time to create Squidoo lenses, join the SquidU forums and let people get to know you.  Share and learn from the long-timers.  Everything you need to know to succeed on Squidoo is already at Squidoo.  That is what makes it remarkable.  It is a giving, helpful community with members that share their secrets to help you succeed.  You can learn the ins and outs of squidoo, HTML, CSS, Marketing techniques and much more just by browsing the search box at Squidoo.  If you join the forums at SquidU, you will find a wealth of information by those who know Squidoo best.

Often people make the mistake of trying to use Squidoo to spam.  Yes, some get away with it, but there are those who have the power to keep spam down to a minimum and can even “ding” lenses which are considered spam.  These people are Squid Angels.  The good news is, they can also bless a lens they feel is very good. 

There are some basic Dos and Donts concerning creating a lens on Squidoo:

DO:

• Write original content and not copy and paste from  your website.
• Use the titles and subtitles to your SEO advantage
• Use as many modules as you can; video, yelp, blackbox, etc.
• Join the SquidU forums and learn as well as make new friends
• Visit other lenses and comment.  This will bring more traffic to YOUR lens
• Make Squidoo an important part of your marketing and/or branding
• Involve your reader and make it interesting for them
• Keep trying with Squidoo.  More lenses, more readers, more credibility.
• Have fun!  It can be a lot of fun building Squidoo lenses

Do NOT:

• Hard Sell!
• Put a link in the introduction paragraph
• Spam!  Spam is NOT tolerated on Squidoo. 
• Use Squidoo as a teaser to link to another writing venue (BIG NO NO!)
• Underestimate the power of Squidoo and the community.  Squidoo has helped many acheive success

Squidoo gets millions of hits a month.  Something is working somewhere.  Beware of those who are new to Squidoo and yet claim to know how to teach you to strike it rich with Squidoo.  One must first be a follower to be an effective leader.  The forums are a good place to know who the people in the know are.  Those who truly know Squidoo are happy to share with you, free of charge.
