This is an article about how to market your life for fun and profit.
Content on a blog is everything. We are all bloggers. Even if you don’t have a personal blog you can still think of yourself as a blogger because that’s really what you’re doing on Triond. You’re blogging. So think of yourself as a professional freelance blogger. And you’re a professional blogger because Triond pays you to blog. This is how I think of myself. Our problem as professional bloggers is how to make as much money as possible blogging.

This brings us to the need for a steady flow of ideas to blog about. I suggest that you look no further than your own life for content that will bring you a constant flow of readers.
Now you may think that no one wants to read about what you had for dinner; and you would be right. No one wants to read about what I had for dinner, either. But I do a lot of cooking in my crock pot. I would blog about crock pot cooking. See what I’m getting at?
No one really wants to to read about what I said to my 90 year-old mother when I phoned her yesterday. But suppose I was to blog about the challenges adult children face in dealing with ageing parents? You get my drift? A blogger has to take the particulars of his or her private life and blog about the universality of the experience.
You not only have experiences to draw on you also have interests and knowledge that is particular to you but can be applied to a larger audience.
This is how you market your life for the online business of blogging and making money. So, you don’t need a personal blog if you don’t have one. Do your blogging on Triond. And Triond will do the rest.
Happy blogging!

Excellent advice, My blog is about my husband, he provides plenty to write about and I have built up a regular readership.

Thanks for some great tips and how to apply them to your blog.

chitraopi, our personal lives are made up of so many things. If we focus on something in our lives that may give insight into a situation that others may have, what we blog about will be of interest to others, too.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Petalm, you just have to blog about things that people can relate to; but then at the end of the post you have to offer up a possible, useful insight. You know, what it all means.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Frances, your husband will no doubt provide you with plenty to write about. However, let me gently suggest that unless your husband is some sort of celebrity you may want to think of your blog about your husband as really a blog about marriage, or intimate adult relationships or balancing professional and personal life in modern society or about the funny, endearing things that happen in marriage. You see what I mean? And maybe that’s what you’re doing already when you say you blog about your husband. Of course if you’re doing none of these things and are happy with your blog the way it is, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Mary, we all have things in our lives that other people can relate to. It’s our challenge as bloggers to find what these things are and to allow readers to see parts of themselves in us.

Excellent work as always Guy! This is a great article, offering some very valuable advice to just about every writer, reaching out far beyond just Triond! Good stuff!

Mystify, I think bloggers can certainly pull in an audience blogging about their personal lives if they remember that they have an audience that wants to be entertained or given some useful insight on life.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
I was thinking of myself as I was reading your article. This is exactly what I do. lol. blog about my own life. Sometimes I don’t know what to write about, but I don’t want the entire triond community to know about my life.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I really dig this article!!!
October 25th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Thank you for another insightful article, Guy. I always enjoy reading them. There sure is a lot to write about and most of us don’t really write stories-I really don’t know how to write stories, but I enjoy non-fiction, just taken from real life incidents. I still don’t understand where blogging goes on, or how you even get started in it? But I will probably be satisfied just writing on Triond if someone doesn’t tell me where to blog.
Best wishes from me!

Very good tips. Come to think of it, people could actually learn from our own experiences. I learn from others’ blogs, too.

marlene, when a blogger blogs about her life she definitely wants to protect her privacy. We all hold something back. We all hold a lot back.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:09 am
wballard, a blogger just has to keep in mind that readers want entertainment or useful information or insights. So the blogger can use his own life to provide these things.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:13 am
mo, when you publish on Triond it’s just like blogging. You don’t need to set up your own blog. Think of Triond as your blog.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:17 am
cutedrishti8, everyone’s life is full of things to blog about.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:23 am
athena, one of the beautiful things about writing about your own life is that the words give you some distance from yourself. The words allow you to better judge your actions. So, yes you can learn from your own life.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:28 am
wonder, a successful blogger just has to remember that the reader wants to be able to relate to the blogger’s life.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Jamie, blogging can be a lot of fun.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:33 am

Great tip. I will definitely use that for my next posts.
October 26th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Thanks for this one. I still have hopes for Triond. Of course it isn’t Triond’s concern if my blogs had been taken for granted by would be readers. I recall all those networking schemes I’d been through and this is networking in itself by a different medium.
October 27th, 2009 at 2:41 am
Great points! Thanks.
October 27th, 2009 at 8:04 am
Thanks Guy.
A good illustration of the time-tested rule for any writer:
Write what you know.
That is the basic foundation and if you don’t know your own life…writing about it can help you learn and grow.

It works. It’s basically putting your life activities into a more general form to write in.

“take the particulars of his or her private life and blog about the universality of the experience.”
I liked it Guy.
