How to Make Money From Writing

Money Making

A list and explanation of some of the best ways to use your writing talent to make money.

Sell stories to magazines

There are plenty of Fictional story magazines which exist from the submissions of readers.  Make sure to research the magazine you are going to send your work to, to ensure that your piece fits their style and that your presentation conforms to their expectations. Writing for magazines gives you a lot of freedom in that you should be able to find a medium for any genre, and you have the option of writing a short story, multi-chapter (but not too long) or even a poem. If the magazine really likes your work, or it is particularly well received by readers then you may be asked to write more for them. Have fun, use your imagination and let your hobby help pay the bills.

Write a book

Ok, so I know it sounds daunting but if you like writing and have a good idea in your head then this is a brilliant and fun way to earn a bit of extra money and leave your mark on the world.  Writing a book has no deadline unless you agree to one with a publisher which means you can relax and work at your own pace.

Of course it doesn’t have to be a fiction piece. If you’re particularly knowledgeable about something, or have the time to research a certain topic, you could write a non-fiction book. Some suggestions might be a recipe book, if you like cooking, or a travel guide if there is a location you are particularly fond of, the possibilities are truly endless.

Write freelance articles for magazines

A decent portion of the articles published in magazines or on websites are written by freelance writers. A freelance writer is someone who writes for a variety of sources with no obligation or contract. Many people make a decent living out of this, but it can also be a great way to supplement your current income. Any articles you write as freelance can also be made into a portfolio to show your experience to potential employers.

Write jokes or messages for greetings cards

Ever wondered where the jokes or poems in greetings cards come from? Many of them are submitted by average members of the public with a good idea and just a little bit of spare time.  It doesn’t take long to write a few lines for a card so you’ve got nothing to lose.  If you have a unique and witty sense of humour, or a knack for romance and poetry then give this a try.

Start up a blog

You can make money from blogging by adding advert links to your page. When people click on these you receive a portion of the revenue generated, kind of like how you receive a portion of the revenue generated on Triond. Whilst most people only make a little extra money on blogs, many people are making sizeable incomes, even enough to support themselves fully without another job.

Write regularly for Triond

This is one of the obvious ones. With no obligation or contract, little to no restriction and easy to submit and manage work, Triond is a dream for any budding writer looking to earn a little bit of extra money, or even make some serious cash if you’re successful.
