Photography has always been a great form of art. You don’t have to hold and brush or a pen, you don’t have to have a rhyming dictionary on your desk, and of course, you don’t need to be at a desk! It is a great way to taking memories and other interesting objects or people with you in a small box – your camera.

Selling photography is the challenging part. Here’s the good news. You don’t have to be that good. It would help to have at least some skill in photography. The online community is always looking for pictures. Bloggers, editors, and the art lover will buy your photo if it’s what they want. Here are my tips to getting paid for something you love.

1. Learn the craft!

Don’t expect to just pick up a camera and earn thousands of dollars. Learn the craft. Here are some link to some good places to learn your craft:

2. Take many, many photos.

Good news! The first tip is the easiest. The more subjects you cover, the more people will be interested. Don’t just take a hundred pictures of a sunset and expect to get rich. Try taking pictures of a bird, a person, a cloud, a blade of grass, whatever.

3. Consider joining a stock community.

Some stock communities, such as iStockPhoto, will pay you every time your image is downloaded (iStockPhoto pays a base royalty of 20%) . If you have 1000 images up, and each of them is downloaded 1000 times… You will soon learn that social networking can play a big role in getting business.

4. Blog!

Blogs are a great way to get your name out there. Put up your extra photos and sell them from your blog. Be sure to put a watermark on them first though. You wouldn’t want art thieves to steal your work.
