Google has launched a new project called knol which is in its beta stage and has been launched recently to public at large. As knol website states  “A Knol is an authoritative article about a specific topic.” 

Many people on the web are saying it is Google’s alternative competitor of Wikipedia, but as i can see it, they are two completely different projects all together with their own utilities and strengths. As one of the main distinguishing features in a knol is that its in the writers hands to allow if others can edit their articles or not or whether they want to collaborate and write, so there are a host of new controls there and though a knol can be a knowledge page about anything, unlike Wikipedia it can have many different pages about the same things from different writers.
