What is Viral Increase in Traffic Like?

The Mountain Trend in Online Traffic

I’m a little bit hesitant in writing about viral traffic as it is possible many writers had experienced better outcomes in online traffic than me. I just present briefly my case as I do not have a concrete idea how viral traffic would look like unless I put it here and see how writers respond to it or compare their own trends with mine.

Here’s what I got after that phenomenal increase I experienced last November 13 onwards that led to multiple increases in readership and income. I call it the “mountain trend”.

Friday the 13th, A Day of Good Luck

Traffic increased from Friday the 13th which superstition holds to be a day of good or bad luck. Obviously, I experienced the former. There was a sustained increase for five days then gradually returned back to ‘normal’ as I expected. It took a week for readership to decline to its usual trend, but I got higher reads than before when I employed Adwords Google. It’s exactly seven days before it returned to that inching crawl towards uncertainty.

Worldwide Traffic and E-Mail Links

From the trend, I could surmise that this is the general behavior of online traffic worldwide. Significant increases in surfing starts on a Friday since everybody takes time to rest and relax from a heavy workweek. It is possible that those who read my article passed on the information to friends with like interests through their e-mails with the corresponding links. So, traffic was sustained until Tuesday. As e-mails get read and get saturated with the information, traffic gradually declined until all was back to ‘normal’.

Another Case to Consider

I saw Dr. Brignall’s 15 minute fame article and thought the reason for sudden increase might be different. It is possible that his work landed on a site (e.g. such as front page of Yahoo or similar site) where thousands were able to see it and respond right there and then as it peaked in a day with more than 500 views then suddenly dropped. Somebody said it has something to do with the timing of your publication, as it happened to be there when most surfers start to read around. But we do not have a control over that as Triond reviews our articles (we don’t know how long it will take) before publishing.

Let’s Unlock the Pandora’s Box

Did you experience this sudden increase in traffic too? That will be an added case to consider and compare. Let’s unravel this mystery.

I have been experiencing a sudden surge in traffic, for the past 3 days now. The only new thing I can think of is, I have launched 2 blogs(1 day and 6 days ago). I am getting just a few people from there. Not too sure why my traffic has suddenly gone up for the past few days. Will let you know how long it lasts, or if it dies down.

It’s all rather mysterious to me. It seems like a lot of hard work to unlock the key. :-)
