For over a year now I have used the web to communicate with friends or blog about my life. I have also used it as a tool to promote myself to potential employers and for helping others through my free templates, but the one thing I and many others find it hard to do is get noticed. I mean, the web is a huge place and big names get first place in search engines. How is the little guy, with hardly any money meant to market his website or service? So I thought I would take a look and see what qualities does a site need to have to be listed in a prominent place on
Google
and the answer is links!
The more links you have the better your chances of getting noticed which brought me to another question? How can I get the link popularity I need without spending an arm and a leg?
The answer is simple… web directories.
Web directories are usually free, with the option of paying to be listed in the sponsor’s area. Also, the way in which web directories work is much more simple than a search engine because things are listed in categories. One place to list your site on is DirMania, one of many web directories out there.
On web directories like DirMania, Yahoo Directory and google Directory you find a category that most suites your type of website and then click on the “website submission” link somewhere on that page. Your submission is then sent to the team of administrators to be approved. Once approved you’re listing will be put online for others to see. The only thing they may ask in return is that you put a link back to them. It can be anywhere you like, in the footer or sidebar would be the common places.
The great thing about web directories is that you can find what your looking for fast, it also enable you to be more accurate when searching. For example, type in to google a keyword like “Ashley Johnson”. You may be looking for an abstract artist but most probably you will end up with the actress first! With directories you would go to “artists” and find “Ashley Johnson”. Also, the more directories you are listed on the better your link popularity and a much better chance of being within the first two pages of google!
Conclusion: All in all web directories is a great place to start when making a presence on the net, as there are hundreds to be listed on.
