Any marketer who has been online for any time has probably heard of, or used, a safelist. Some can do very well with them while others end up no better off (and with 10,000 e-mails a day to read!). This is a basic guideline to help you manage and promote safelist advertisements.
Safelists have been on the internet for a long time and they do work if you can utilise them properly. The fact that they have survived so long proves that they can be a great source of free traffic if they are worked correctly. Getting some of the basics right can help you on the way to a good response with them and help you deal with your incoming mail (and you will receive quite a lot of mail) in a more efficient way.
I’ve listed the things below that I would consider fairly important to anyone interested in this form of advertising. They are random thoughts and observations borne out of experience. They have been proven to work for me. I hope they will work for you too.
- Get disposable e-mail addresses if you intend using safelists. I wouldn’t use my personal e-mail address for them as they simply clutter it up. You can get free e-mail accounts at Googlemail.com and you can open several if you wish. All the safelists that I’ve worked with up to now have accepted Googlemail as an e-mail address whereas they do reject some others.
- Use the most compelling headline that you can think up or find when you are composing your safelist ad/e-mail. The people who read your e-mails will be getting a lot of other e-mails too so your headline has to be good.
“If you can’t say it in 120 characters, you ain’t got nuthin’ to say”.
You might even get less than that to say it in, so choose words carefully.
- Find the top benefits or unique qualities of whatever you are promoting and work some of these into your headlines if you can. This is a handy skill for any marketer or copywriter to learn as much of the success and failure online is determined by how well headlines are written. Think about who you want to reach with your message/your target audience and how your service/product will help them the greatest. A lot of people are probably looking for what you have to offer and your headline is going to be the first bit that they see. How you actually feel about the product that you promote can really affect how your promotions go too.
- For the main body of your e-mail make it as short and to the point as you can but give the reader enough information to arouse his/her interest or curiosity. This will usually be a few sentences which will maybe be a little bit about you, your promotion etc. How you word your e-mail really depends again on who you are trying to reach. People like reading stories and for some promotions this could be ideal but for others just a few meaningful words and a link to your website is enough. It just really depends. Your text in the main body should support and be consistent with your headline to gain your readers trust and keep your credibility. You text should also expand the promise or claim in your headline but not too much as you now want your reader to click on the link to your website. You can place site links either above or below your text (or both) in most safelist programs.
- Put as much information about yourself as possible in your closing signature as this again builds trust with the reader but only give out as much personal details as you feel safe doing though.
- Find good safelists. To find out which safelists are the best visit TrafficHoopla.com where you will find a link on the right side of the homepage to “Top Ranked Safelists”. Click the link and this will take you to a page that will tell you the best performing programs online at the present time. A lot of other handy info there too.
I hope these tips help you out, they are mostly general things but if you have any specific questions that you would like answered you can leave me a comment or send me a message. I’ll reply as soon as I can.
