Traffic exchanges can be goldmines of free advertising if you understand how they work and if your promotion is right. They are easy for the newcomer online to learn, and results are seen fairly quickly if basic guidelines are followed.
Simply put, traffic exchanges are marketing services that will promote your webpage URL(s) free in return for you viewing their member webpage URL(s). Firstly you view the other member’s websites on special screen frames with timers which clock up credits every so often. Once you have earned the credits you will then allocate them to the sites that you have chosen to promote and the other members will be shown your sites. That’s basically how they work. You view other member’s sites and they will view yours.
However, there is a bit more to them than this and to get good results, you need to understand some basic techniques and be aware of dangers and pitfalls.
When Not to Use Traffic Exchanges
- You probably won’t be able to run them very well if your computer is really old as they do require certain speeds to work properly
- If your operating system is especially susceptible to spyware as you will sometimes pick up malicious files. You can download Adware.SE Personnel which is free for private use. I would recommend that you do this if you are surfing regularly and give your computer a scan every couple of days or so and as I’ve said already don’t use them if you’re system is slow or very weak.
- If you don’t have the time. Depending on how much traffic you are after you will probably spend several hours a day on Traffic Exchanges looking at other people’s websites and adverts.
- When you are promoting certain products or services: The first thing to consider here is who your average traffic exchange user will be. He or she is someone who is trying to make money. Looking at the websites that come up when you are surfing for credits can be interesting, but most or all of the members are doing it to promote and earn. They are buyers, but not usually when they are surfing for credits so promoting sites that directly sell physical products like DIY tools or CD’s isn’t a great idea (although it might work for every millionth viewer and someone out there may prove me wrong) nor any other similar kind of things. Same goes for certain non-physical (digital) products too but rather than list them I’ll talk below about what does work and you can figure out from there if you feel that Traffic Exchanges may be useful and profitable to you.
What Does Work on Traffic Exchanges?
- Online business opportunities (free and paid) of all descriptions
- Other Traffic Exchanges
- Referral programs of most types
How to Obtain Good Responses, Sign Ups, and Sales
- Use Splash pages: Splash pages are single, simply designed quick loading pages that give the viewer your marketing message in a way that makes him want to stop surfing and read about what you have to say or offer. Many companies that you may promote will provide you with pre-made splash pages or you can make your own with TE Toolbox.com or several other sites
- Hit your viewer with the best benefit that your product, service etc can do for them, what solution does it offer? How does it make their life easier or better? You only have so many seconds to make an impression so the page layout should be simple and clean cut with a meaningful and relevant message to the viewer. You can look at the pre-made splash pages offered by affiliate programs and these should give you some ideas.
- Use several exchanges at once: I would say up to four. This is done using a multi-tab browser such as Firefox which you can download free, which allows you to open numerous websites on the same browser and also to load multiple pages together. Firefox Easy Tab is another free tool which you can use in your surfing activities.
- Use manual Traffic Exchanges for better conversions: There are two main types which are auto and manual. In the auto system you simply watch the sites that are shown to you. They will change every so often and credits will be added to your account when they do, but conversion rate is generally quite poor compared to the manual method. With some of the auto sites you can trade your surfing credits for banner and text ads which I’ve found to give me better results than promoting my actual site.
- Use lead capture boxes: These work great on Traffic Exchanges and are ideal for anyone looking to build an e-mail list. Offer a free report or newsletter in exchange for the viewers E-mail address which they enter into the lead capture box. A good way to make initial contact.
- Last but not least, use good exchanges: The Traffic Exchange industry is huge and there are thousands of different ones that you can use. To find out what’s performing on peak you can visit TrafficHoopla.com where they do weekly reviews on the best sites currently operating.
In summary: Traffic Exchanges can be a useful tool in the marketer’s toolbox and be a lot of fun in the process. A lot of the site’s have games, quizzes, one arm bandits and all kinds of bonus’s and things built in and with a bit of time invested you may see a lot of free traffic coming your way.
