The Poster Plan: How to Go Viral

Marketing

Many businesses reach for poster campaigns when they need to get a lot of attention fast. Everybody wants to go viral: when people start spreading the word about your campaign, it leverages your advertising dollar exponentially. But obviously not every poster campaign gets lots of attention. How can you increase your odds of going viral?

Simple Message

Keep your message simple and easy to remember. People only retain a small amount of information, so decide what it is you want them to recall later. Is it the date of an event? Is it a unique idea? Condense your message into a single sentence at most and let the image on the poster tell the rest of the story.

Dramatic Visual Effect

Tell a story with your poster design. The viewer should be able to quickly engage and see an event or be struck by the imagery. If it would work on a brochure, it’s probably not edgy enough for a poster. Push the envelope. Go for a little shock value. Make sure you print posters in color, even if you just use a small amount for an effect, such as a bright red rose in a black and white scene.

Surprising Locations

Get creative with the locations and make the placement part of the viral message. Look for places that your eye might wonder to and try to get your poster printing projects in those places. You might be surprised. Creative spots such as at the end of an aisle in the workplace or at eye level along a side walk will intrigue passers-by enough for them to pay attention. So try to find spots that might not be so expected, but would be all the more dramatic when noticed.

Final Thoughts

Viral marketing can be accomplished on purpose and the key is connecting with people on a deeper level than standard advertising tends to go. It’s not enough to just go viral though: you want your brand and message to be remembered. So keep the message short and simple, use dramatic, imagery, and integrate the location of your posters into the message.
