The Internet Will Kill Us

Obesity is a growing problem.

If you think back twenty years, before the time where everyone had internet in their house, then you must be able to think about the fact that there is a very big difference between the way people lived their lives back then and the way they live their lives at the moment in the modern day.

In the past, if you wanted something done during the day, you would have to go out of your house in order to do it. An example of this would be if you needed to go to the bank or get your weekly food shopping done. Now, everything can be done online meaning that we don’t have to do this anymore.

The amount of information that we can get our hands on at the click of a button is worrying, too. In the past, we would have had to go down to our local library if we wanted information, however now all that we need to do is click onto a search engine and we have practically everything that there is to possibly be known about a given subject.

This can damage our health in two main ways. Firstly, we are gaining weight as a society because of the fact that people just aren’t moving around enough anymore. Secondly, because we’re sitting in the same place for so long each and every day, people are getting more blood clots which can lead to strokes and heart attacks. This is putting a growing amount of pressure on the NHS and this means that we need to think about what we can do about it as soon as possible.

Our social lives are suffering, too. On average, people now leave their homes to meet up with friends for a social night twice each week. This is down from around five times per week before the internet became so widespread, and it is obviously a problem which needs to be addressed before things get even worse.

The ideal thing to do would be to put a limit on the amount of time that each person is able to spend on the internet each day. However, it may be a little late to put this into effect as so many of us are earning online now that it would be unfair of the government to do this.

Instead, education is needed into healthy lifestyles and also local councils need to do more to make people get out of the house and back into the community.

Great article. I agree that things have changed drastically since the internet has came around. As far as the information on the net as opposed to a library, though is questionable. I have noticed since writing for many sites on the net that some information on encyclopedia sites and history sites are very inaccurate, so be careful when researching.
I have noticed a big change in our children as a result of internet, computers and video games. It seems we may be becoming a lazy society with shorter life spans.

I don’t know if I buy the idea of the internet contributing to obesity. I think that people who are inherently lazy would be whether they had the internet or not, and that people who are active will be active despite the internet. Don’t you think so??
