Check the Alexa rank of that site, the better the rank, the more visitors you are able to get because it means the site has more traffic.

More important than the Alexa rank is the Page Rank. Google gives more importance to pages with a higher page rank than to pages with a lower page rank. The quality of the links counts more than the quantity. If you get links from a bad website you can even have your rank lowered. This is not fair but happens frequently.

Sites you should not try include link farms where you can send another link to a page with no content, only has links and more links.

You should also never ask people with bad websites to link to you. You will only get bad reputation from Google. Only ask people with better ranks than you, with a better page rank and also a better Alexa rank.
