The meaning of this will be explained trough this article. The article is just meant as a quick guide. We won’t give the tags or ways of performing the things we mention. We’ll be talking about SEO as a whole. I hope you enjoy and find this information useful. Please contact me for questions or feedback.

What is SEO?

SEO stand for “Search Engine Optimization”. As a website owner you want to make sure you are found. For example, if you own a company that sells plants, you want as many customers to come to your website so they can purchase your product. In order to achieve this we need to boost our website with SEO. By doing this our website will come higher in search engines (like google, yahoo, etc)

I will go through a list of things we can do to improve this.

Ways of the SEO (Keep It cleaN, Keep It healthY)

Things You Must Do

  1. Use clean code

Search engines can index your site much easier. They won’t have to struggle to get the data they need.

  2. Use the meta tags

Even though some say they are less important, it’s still best to make full use of them.

  3. Fill your title tags

Keep your titles clean and relevant but if possible try to get some keywords of your content in there.

  4. Chose headings wisely

Your headings are of utmost importance. Use your keywords in them. Dont spam though.

  5. Keyword density

Use a healthy amount of keywords in your content. There are a lot of keyword density tools out there. Nobody knows the best density, I advice to make the text easy to read, understand and making sure you don’t get annoyed by reading the same keywords over and over. As I said keep it clean, keep it healthy.

  6. Inbound links

Most important is having links pointing at your website. Not only from within but mostly from outside. However we only want traffic of good quality. So I do not recommend signing up for “increase traffic” services as they mostly non-relevant traffic. Advertising is a good way to get quality traffic. Even better is product placement.

I once heard a golden rule from another webdesigner. It was a golden rule in their family’s business. Their rule was “To invest 10% income into advertising”. And boy was his business and his family’s business Successful. Leave your link at as many places as you can but never spam. Use your other sites or blogs to link sites to each other.

  7. Adding your URL

Register your URL at as many search engines possible. However if you add your URL too often to a search engine it is possible for them to ban your site. Then it takes months to regain your position.

  8. ODP your URL

Add your website to “Open Directory Project” Take some time finding the right category before adding it. Many major search engines make use of ODP.

  9. Know your foes

Examine the source code of your competetors’ websites. Know their structure, keywords and pagerank.

  10. Organic structure

Make sure your website structure is easy to follow and understand. Make sure your visitors know where they are but also let the spiders know.

Bad Things You Must Not Do

  1. Play Black hat

Using black hat techniques are unfair, annoying but also useless. In the end they will mean a bad thing for your website and sales. Or even get banned once the search engines find out. For the sake of the internet and it’s users, keep it whitehat.

  2. Traffic services

As mentioned before, they do not deliver quality traffic. Check the “inbound links” section again if you want.

  3. Link exchange

Though it is a way that sometimes works I would be careful. In the “link exchange” scenario, we have 2 websites Both want to gain a better page rank and are willing to exchange links to eachother’s sites. However there is a possibility you get scammed. The other may put his link on a page that is not indexed by spiders. Or he can simply remove the link after a week or so while you keep linking to him.

  4. Spamming

Don’t spam forums, it’s annoying. If you want to leave your links somewhere check the “inbound links” section
    again.

Final Words

This concluded our little article. In the end we can still conclude our motto for this article: “Keep it clean, keep it healthy”. I find SEO highly interesting, it is an art. A mind battle against others to get the highest pagerank. Not only do our sales increase, the website itself becomes of bigger value.  Websites don’t get value solely from their technology anymore. Google rankings are money these days. It’s a big game. So you’ve put your design and coding skills to the edge to create your website? Fair enough but in the end we can all create the highest technology and prettiest website. But SEO is a skill that requires skill, patience and logic. An epic battle between web designer and search engines.

Welcome to the world of SEO.
